    [02] Foreign envoys - Visits

    Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA) -- Foreign envoys dealing with the Cyprus question are expected on the island in the first week of May in a bid to push the peace process forward.

    The UN special advisor for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and Britain's envoy Sir David Hannay are the first to return to the island for contacts with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

    [04] Australian High Commissioner - Credentials

    Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today received he credentials of the new High Commissioner of Australia Franz Johann Ingruber, who stressed his country's support "the UN Secretary-General's efforts, aided by the US, the United Kingdom, the European Union and a host of other countries, to find a just and viable solution" to the Cyprus problem.

    Ingruber noted that "a settlement of the dispute is long overdue" and that "like the rest of the international community, we strongly hope that the forthcoming third round of UN proximity talks will be able to make substantive progress".

    [05] Moroccan Ambassador - Credentials

    Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA) - President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides today received the credentials of the first Ambassador of Morocco to Cyprus Noureddine Sefiani.

    Speaking at the ceremony, Sefiani said that his appointing of an Ambassador to Cyprus expresses the ambition of the Moroccan government "to give a new impetus to our relations in all areas especially in those where there is a room for further improvement like trade, business, tourism, cultural affairs and human exchanges".

    [07] Finance Minister - Tax cuts - Compensatory measures - VAT

    Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA)-- Finance Minister Takis Klerides today announced his proposals for tax cuts and compensatory measures totalling 65,9 million Cyprus pounds in view of the government's plan to raise the VAT rate (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,7 US dollars).

    As part of the island's harmonisation process with the acquis communautaire, the government has repeatedly stressed that the VAT rate, now at 8 per cent, should go up with all indications pointing to a new rate of 10 per cent.
