[02] President Clerides - Leventis Foundation

    By Emilia Christofi

New York, Apr 6 (CNA) -- "The promotion of Cyprus' culture abroad contributes towards our struggle for our national identity," said here last night Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

Addressing a dinner given by the Leventis Foundation to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Galleries of Cypriot Art, President Clerides said promotion of the island's culture also is "an effective weapon" against "the destruction of our cultural heritage in the areas outside the control of the Cyprus government" as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory.

[3] UN envoy - Cyprus - Peace talks

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Apr 6 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has expressed the view the sooner the Cyprus peace process moves to a phase of more concrete talks the better it would be, but could not predict the possibilities for face to face talks.

Speaking to CNA after a two-hour lunch hosted by Cyprus' Permanent Representative at the UN Ambassador Sotos Zakheos for Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, de Soto said "the President was here and the Ambassador had the good initiative that we should get together, an opportunity to talk, " noting, however, no one "could say any business was transacted."
