    [01] Government Spokesman - EU - Helsinki conclusions

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government does not share the view that there is a European Union tendency to depart from the Helsinki conclusions with regard to Cyprus' accession to the Union, its Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Replying to questions, Papapetrou, noted, that during discussions on the up- coming EU-Turkey Association Council views were expressed, which met with the disagreement of the Greek government.

    [02] Cyprus - Sri Lanka - Shipping agreement

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Sri Lanka have upgraded an existing shipping agreement between the two countries by initialling a new one.

    The new upgraded agreement is the result of negotiations last week between a delegation from the Cyprus Ministry of Communications and Works and officials from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Shipping, Port Development, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.

    [03] Cyprus - China - Air-transport agreement

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus and China have initialled an air transport agreement, expected to develop relations between the two countries in the fields of economy, tourism and culture.

    The agreement was initialled today in Beijing by the Permanent Secretary of Cyprus' Ministry of Communications and Works Vassos Pyrgos and Chinese Civil Aviation official Zhang Yafeng.

    [06] EDON - Rapprochement festival

    Nicosia, Apr 5 (CNA) -- Left-wing youth organization EDON is organizing a ten- day rapprochement festival from April 5 to 15 aiming at sending a message of friendship and cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

    Speaking at a press conference today, EDON General Secretary Stephanos Stephanou said this was the eighth such festival organized by the youth branch of the leading opposition party AKEL and stressed the need and importance of rapprochement "in the struggle against occupation and for the reunification of our country".

    [08] EU Commissionner - US - Enlargement

    Brussels, Apr 5 (CNA) -- European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen yesterday started a three-day visit to the United States to brief the authorities, the Congress and the public of the country on the EU enlargement process.

    According to Verheugen's schedule, he will meet with Secretary of State Madeleine Albbright, members of the Administration and the Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the House of Representatives Ben Gilman. He will also participate in debates in Washington and Chicago.

    [09] Cyprus - EU - Foreign, Security policy

    Brussels, Apr 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus is set to close provisionally one more chapter in its accession negotiations with the European Union, on Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) this coming Monday, following today's unanimous decision by EU permanent representatives of member states to this effect.

    The draft agreed text, due to be approved on Monday by the General Affairs Council, notes that "at this stage, this chapter does not require further negotiation" and adds "the EU may return to this chapter at an appropriate moment."
