    [03] Spokesman - Press report - South Lebanon Army

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, today dismissed as "totally unfounded" press reports about the alleged relocation of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus. According to Israeli media reports, the SLA wanted to relocate its fighters and their families, fearing Hezbollah reprisals, to the Turkish occupied northern third of the Republic at a location near the ceasefire line.

    [04] UN envoy - Cyprus visit

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) - Alvaro de Soto, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Cyprus, embarks on a "familiarisation visit" to the island tomorrow, the first since his appointment to this post last November. The Peruvian diplomat, who arrives late Tuesday night, will travel extensively in both the southern government controlled areas of the Republic and the northern Turkish occupied part for an on-the-spot briefing about the situation here. He will then fly to Ankara and Athens for talks, an UNFICYP statement said here Monday.

    [05] Lyssarides - Libya

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) - President of the Movement of Socialdemocrats, Vassos Lyssarides, said that Libya has reaffirmed its support to the just struggle of the people of Cyprus, and that the country's leader, Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi, has expressed his will to help towards a solution of the Cyprus problem and develop all sectors of bilateral relations. Speaking about his recent visit to Libya, Lyssarides told CNA that everyone realises how much Cyprus needs "this kind of bilateral relations" and that "now that the sanctions against Libya have been lifted, she will be a country to which we must dynamically turn".

    [06] Cyprus – Belarus

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) - Cyprus and Belarus have signed an agreement aiming at promoting bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of Media and Information. The agreement was signed today by Acting General Director of the Press and Information Office Androulla Laniti and President of Belarus' State Press Committee Michail Pontgaini, who is visiting Cyprus heading a delegation.

    [07] Spokesman - Cem - Illegal visit

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) - The government believes that "very generous" moves can be made in the direction of the Turkish Cypriots in matters relating to the economy and the standard of living in the occupied part of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today. Papapetrou further said he has not detected any sign of change in the Turkish policy on Cyprus but noted that Turkey's Foreign Minister Ismail Cem refrained from referring to his long- standing position for a confederation in Cyprus.
