    Nicosia, Feb 9(CNA) - The Defence Ministry said "the National Guard had no involvement whatsoever" with last night's incident during which shots were heard from the Turkish occupied north at the Dherynia area, adding that "this has also been d etermi ned by the United Nations".

    UNFICYP Spokesman, Charles Gaulkin, invited by CNA to comment on the National Guard press release repeated an earlier statement that "we have no indication about the identity of the persons that fired the shots".

    [01] Cyprus - CoE Conventions

    Nicosia, Feb 9 (CNA) - Cyprus today ratified the European Agreement relating to Persons participating in Proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights, the Sixth Protocol of the General Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the Council of Europe, and the Protocol of Amendment to the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Specific Purposes.

    The instruments of ratification were handed by Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Christoforos Yiangou, who also signed today the European Convention on the Transfer of Proceedings in Criminal Matters.

    [02] Greek FM - Cyprus talks

    Athens, Feb 9(CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, reiterated that the Cyprus problem remains Greece's first national priority and that it is in the centre of its foreign policy which remains committed to a solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, according to UN decisions.

    Commenting on the conclusions of the second round of the UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus, which ended yesterday in Geneva, Papandreou said the fact that a new round has been set for May and that the UN and the international community will in the me antime continue mediation efforts, "contribute in maintaining the dynamic for a Cyprus settlement".

    [03] Clerides - Return - Proximity talks

    Larnaca, Feb 9(CNA) - The Cyprus problem can only be solved if Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash alters his positions, said Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides here Wednesday.

    In statements on his return from Geneva where the second round of the UN-led proximity talks took place, the President said they analysed and concluded discussions on the four fundamental aspects of the Cyprus problem which were raised during the fi rst round last December, namely the distribution of powers, security, property and territory.
