    [02] Papandreou - Cem - Press conference - Cyprus

    Athens, Feb 4 (CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said the fact that Greece and Turkey are able to show that they can work together creates new hope for cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

    Speaking during a joint press conference with his visiting Turkish counterpart, Ismail Cem, Papandreou said that the Cyprus problem is an international issue, adding that it is being handled in the context of the United Nations, with the good offices of UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.

    [03] Spokesman - Denktash - Statement

    Geneva, Feb 4 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou expressed today "sadness" over a written statement by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, accusing President Glafcos Clerides of "hypocrisy" and "distortion of the reality" in Cyprus.

    In a written statement, Papapetrou points out that President Clerides had "simply stressed his willingness and readiness to negotiate within the ambit set by the international community and the UN by their resolutions and decisions" for a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

    [04] Greek Cypriot - Turkish Cypriot - Newspapers - Articles

    Nicosia, Feb 4 (CNA) - Greek Cypriot left-wing AKEL party and Turkish Cypriot Movement for Patriotic Unity, today initiated a new effort to begin a dialogue on issues of mutual concern through the publishing of articles.

    The articles will be published every Friday, beginning today with an article signed by AKEL General-Secretary Dimitris Christofias in Turkish Cypriot "Yeni Cag" and another written by MPU General-Secretary Izet Incan published in Greek Cypriot "Haravgi".

    [05] House President - Returns

    Larnaca, Feb 4 (CNA) - President of the House of Representatives and leader of center-right wing Democratic Party, Spyros Kyprianou, returned here today from London after undergoing major heart surgery in the US last month.

    Speaking to the press at Larnaca International Airport, Kyprianou thanked his team of doctors and medical staff as well as political leaders and everybody who stood by him during "this most difficult time in my life", he said.

    Solana - EU - Cyprus problem

    Brussels, Feb 4 (CNA) - Secretary General of the Council of the European Union (EU) and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana supports a more active involvement of the European Union (EU) in efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

    Speaking to Brussels accredited journalists, Solana said UN-led proximity talks in Geneva were a positive factor and added that the EU should step up its efforts towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    [06] Foreign Minister - ICRC President - Meeting

    Geneva, Feb 4, (CNA) -- Today's meeting between Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Jacob Kellenberger focused on three main issues relating to the humanitarian issue of missing persons in Cyprus.

    The prospects of reactivating the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP), after the death of the third member Jean Pierre Ritter last month and the problem of the non-implementation of the July 31 1997 agreement between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash were part of the agenda at the meeting which lasted about 45 minutes at the ICRC headquarters.
