[01] British EuroMP - Cyprus question - Letters

Nicosia, Feb 1 (CNA) - British EuroMP Theresa Villiers has written to Prime Minister Tony Blair and President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine calling on them to step up efforts and show more political will for a settlement in Cypru s, in view of the second round of peace talks that opened in Geneva yesterday.

In her letters, dated January 27 and released today, Villiers urges them to call upon the Turkish side to abandon its intransigence in efforts for a settlement in Cyprus, especially after the European Union Helsinki summit which granted Turkey a can didate status and decided the Cyprus Republic can join its ranks even if a settlement is not reached.

[02] President Clerides - De Soto - Meeting

    By Maria Myles

Geneva, Feb 1 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides today made it clear that one side does not know what the other is discussing in their separate talks with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan or his special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, within the framework of the second round of talks that opened in Geneva Monday.

President Clerides was speaking after a 90-minute meeting with de Soto during which they continued the discussion that had begun in the first round of talks held in New York, on the four core issues of the Cyprus problem, namely territory, security, property and distribution of powers.
