Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - A senior European Union official has called on
Cyprus to align its taxation system with that of the Union and increase
value added tax (VAT) but acknowledged this is a long and painful process.
Leopold Maurer, chief EU negotiator for Cyprus, also said that there
is some convergence between ongoing peace talks to resolve the Cyprus
question and membership talks, two processes which run parallel.
