    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - The Cyprus government is taking measures to protect the Russian Embassy and other installations where Russian interests are kept all over the island to avert possible terrorist attacks.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here Wednesday the "government is taking all necessary measures to maintain law and order throughout the territory which the Cyprus Republic controls".

    [02] Romanian bank - IBU

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) --Romania'a biggest bank, Banca Comerciala Romana SA, has been granted a licence by the Central Bank of Cyprus to operate an International Banking Unit (IBU) on the island.

    The licence was granted today and allows the Romanian bank to deal primarily in foreign currencies and work with other non-resident institutions and individuals both in Cyprus and abroad.

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - Efforts by the European Union (EU) to convince the Turkish Cypriot leader of the necessity to involve Turkish Cypriots in the accession negotiations are positive moves, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    He also noted the only way Turkish Cypriots can get involved in membership talks is to accept President Glafcos Clerides' invitation and participate in the Cyprus negotiating team.

    [03] Greek Cypriot - Illegal court - Freed

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - A Greek Cypriot who was abducted by the Turkish troops on Saturday at the Dherynia checkpoint near Famagusta, on the east, was freed today after paying a fine to an illegal "court" in Turkish occupied Cyprus.

    Panagiotis Anastasi Economou, 39, appeared before an illegal "court" today which "ordered" him to pay 100 million Turkish Lira (about 220 US dollars), acting spokesman for the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Charles Gaulkin told CNA.

    Strasbourg, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer said here today that the Committee of Ministers Deputies of the Council will examine again next week the non execution of a judgement of the European Court of Human Rig hts by Turkey in a case relating to human rights violations of a Greek Cypriot.

    Questioned on the issue by British MP Tom Cox, Schwimmer said that "full compliance with the judgements of the Court of Human Rights is indispensable", noting that he raised the issue with Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem in Istanbul last November.

    [04] Simitis - Cyprus - Talks

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis pledged Greece's readiness to work for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on UN Security Council decisions.

    Speaking during a gathering in Athens where two Cypriot ministers presented cheques in aid of the victims of the Athens earthquake last August, Simitis referred to the second round of the UN-proximity talks scheduled to resume on January 31 in Geneva.

    [06] Greece - Simitis - Cypriot minister - Financial assistance

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - Cyprus and Greece share common goals and continuous bilateral cooperation leads to joint efforts, said Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, accepting two cheques worth over one million US dollars for earthquakes vi ctims. The cheques were presented by Cypriot ministers of Finance and Education and Culture, Takis Klerides and Ouranios Ioannides respectively, to Simitis who said Cypriots showed their support from the first day of the earthquake last September.

    "Their help has been very significant", he said, adding that "there are many words which can describe the relationship between Cyprus and Greece but action has proved it: that we are the same people, we have mutual objectives, and we work with each other and are constantly in touch, " Simitis said, thanking the ministers for their assistance.

    [07] EU negotiator - Statements

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - Leopold Maurer, the European Union (EU) chief negotiator for Cyprus, said the Union "has been ready from the very beginning of the negotiations" with Cyprus to accept Turkish Cypriot participation.

    Speaking here today, Maurer said that all outstanding "difficult" issues between the EU and Cyprus "are opening now during the Portuguese EU presidency".
