    [01] Papandreou - Statement - Programme

Athens, Jan 11 (CNA) -- Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou rejected the Turkish proposal for the establishment of a confederation in Cyprus and instead he repeated Athens' position for a bicommunal bizonal federation as envisaged by the UN resolutions.

In a statement to CNA a few hours before arriving in Cyprus for a two- day visit, Papandreou said "our fundamental aim is and remains a just, viable and permanent solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the decisions of the UN Security Council and High Level agreements, the creation of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single international identity, single sovereignty and single citizenship, which will guarantee the security, peaceful co-existence and welfare of its citizens, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots".

[02] UN envoy - Cyprus talks

Nicosia Jan 11 (CNA) -- A senior UN envoy here has expressed cautious optimism about the UN sponsored proximity talks, which as he noted got off to a "good start" and are expected to continue in the future.

James Holger, resident representative of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, also said the UN aims at being up to date with the positions of the two sides on the four core issues (property, constitution, territory and security) in the second round of talks, due to begin at the end of January in Geneva.
