    [01] President Clerides - Romanian Parliament Vice President

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- Romanian Parliament Vice President Andrian Nastase expressed the view there is a window of opportunity in efforts for a Cyprus settlement, pointing out however the need to preserve Cyprus' sovereignty and to reach a solution within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.

    Speaking after a meeting here today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Nastase referred to the importance of strengthening bilateral relations in business, tourism and services and expressed the hope that a social insurance treaty would be signed by the two countries pointing to the large number of his compatriots being employed here.

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has met in Bethlehem with President of the Palestinian Authorities Yasser Arafat and other Palestinian officials with whom he discussed the Middle East peace process and developments concerning the Cyprus problem.

    Kasoulides, visiting Bethlehem for the Orthodox Christmas celebrations at the invitation of Patriarch Diodorus A' was awarded by the Patriarch the Star of Chevalier of the Holy Sepulchre and by the Palestinian leader the decoration "Bethlehem 2000".

    [03] Clerides - Statement - Media reports

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides described here Friday as "entirely untrue" media reports that the UN rejected the Greek Cypriot proposal regarding the territorial aspect of Cyprus.

    He said equally untrue is a statement that the UN has proposed a Federal Republic of Cyprus should have a President and a Prime Minister, noting that such reports are regrettable and create confusion and bitterness to those who work on behalf of the UN or their governments for a Cyprus settlement.

    [04] Polish Government Spokesman - Visit

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- Poland's Government Spokesman, Krzysztof Luft, will pay a two-day visit to Cyprus next week, at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart, Michalis Papapetrou.

    Luft, who arrives in Cyprus on Monday, will be briefed by Papapetrou on the current phase of the Cyprus problem and will discuss issues of mutual interest such as the two countries' European Union accession course.

    [05] Central Bank - Relaxations - Investments

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The Central Bank today announced the introduction of significant relaxations of the long-standing regulations limiting the investment of Cypriots abroad and of foreigners in Cyprus.

    The Bank points out in a statement that the introduction of the relaxations, which come into effect as from today, is part of the island's harmonisation with the acquis communautaire.

    [06] French delegation - Parliamentary Assembly OSCE - Visit

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The President and Vice President of the French delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will pay a three-day visit to Cyprus.

    Michel Voisin and Jean-Claude Lefort, president and vice president respectively, arrive on the island early Monday and will be received the same day by President Glafcos Clerides.

    [07] 2nd Mediterranean Conference on Mathematics Education

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The 2nd Mediterranean Conference on Mathematics Education got underway here Friday with the participation of scientists from 20 countries.

    Opening the two day conference Education and Culture Minister, Ouranios Ioannides said "its conclusions will contribute to the development of education and enable it to respond to the challenges of our time".
