    Nicosia, Jan 5 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Defence Ministry denied as unfounded a report in Egyptian newspaper "Al Ahram" claiming that secret talks were held between Israel, Cyprus and Greece on the strengthening of military cooperation and setting a date for the delivery of Israeli weapons.

    A statement by the Ministry of Defence here Wednesday stressed that "Cyprus maintains excellent relations with all countries in the region."

    [02] AKEL - "Avrupa" newspaper - Letter to Annan

    Nicosia, Jan 5 (CNA) -- Left-wing AKEL party General-Secretary Demetris Christofias has written to the UN chief calling on him to exercise his influence to stop the persecution of Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa".

    In his letter to Kofi Annan, sent today, Christofias says the 260 thousand US dollar fine imposed against the daily aims at silencing a voice that annoys the regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the island and consistently supports a peaceful solution in Cyprus.

    [03] House President - Heart surgery

    Nicosia, Jan 5 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou will undergo heart surgery after a catheterisation today showed stenosis of the coronary artery and mitral valve insufficiency.

    According to director of his office, Marios Karogian, the catheterisation was scheduled some time ago and Kyprianou is expected to be released from hospital today and resume his duties.

    [04] Spokesman - Clinton report

    Nicosia, Jan 5 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government hopes that "the US interest on a settlement in Cyprus in the next critical months will move in the right direction and will reinforce efforts to implement UN decisions".

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou made the statement when invited to comment on US President Bill Clinton's report "A national Security Strategy for a New Century" which refers, among other things, to "building on hopeful developments between Greece and Turkey to make progress in the Aegean, particularly on Cyprus."
