[02] Union of Cyprus Journalists - T/C newspaper - "Fine"

Nicosia, Dec 30 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) has taken action against a decision of an illegal court in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus against Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa" which was sued for "defamation" against Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

"Avrupa" was "fined" more than 128 thousand Cyprus pounds (or 120 billion Turkish Lira) for "defamatory" reports against Denktash.

UCJ President Andreas Kannaouros told CNA the Union has already made representations to the International Federation of Journalists, the European Federation of Journalists, the International Press Institute, the UN, UNESCO and national unions of journalists, condemning the illegal regime's effort to "silence Avrupa".

"The decision of the illegal court confirms the intention of the illegal regime and Ankara to silence the voice of 'Avrupa' which is the voice of freedom and of the rights of Turkish Cypriots", Kannaouros said.

In its editorial today "Avrupa" said the "fine" will end up in Denktash's campaign for the so-called "presidential elections" to be held in the puppet state.

The illegal regime unilaterally declared in the northern Turkish- occupied part of the island is recognised only by Ankara.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
