[01] Foreign Office - Cyprus
London, Dec 1 (CNA) -- One should not expect too much out of the UN-
sponsored proximity talks on Cyprus scheduled to start on Friday in New
York, but if they are effective they will pave the way for negotiations
leading to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, high level
sources at the Foreign Office said here Tuesday.
At the same time, if they are successful, the proximity talks will
take longer than expected and Britain, like other countries with
representatives on Cyprus, will play a helpful role.

[02] US President - Cyprus question
Washington, Dec 1 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton's recent personal
involvement and tireless mediation bore fruit as the leaders of the two
sides in Cyprus agreed to peace talks, says a White House statement on the
US President's activity at home and abroad in November.
It adds that due to the President's leadership "there is new hope for
peace in Cyprus."

[04] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Peace talks - EU
London, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said the
government responded to an invitation to participate in proximity talks for
a settlement in Cyprus because the UN Secretary-General seems to be
convinced the opportunity is still there and after assurances by Kofi Annan
and the US that substantive negotiations on core issues will take place.
Speaking to some 45 British MPs and members of government at a dinner
organised in London Tuesday evening by the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood,
Kasoulides also said Cyprus' European Union accession course should
continue unhindered as the island cannot be a hostage to Turkish
intransigence.

[05] House Deputy President - EU enlargement
Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- The need for an enlarged Europe founded on the
principles of the rule of law and absolute respect of international law and
human rights and the duty of national Parliaments to redress the actions of
culprit states has been stressed by Deputy President of Cyprus' House of
Representatives Nicos Anastasiades.
Speaking at the 8th European Parliament meeting with Speakers of
Parliament of candidate countries in Brussels, Anastasiades pointed to
systematic and massive violation of fundamental human rights in Cyprus as a
result of the 1974 Turkish invasion and the continuing occupation of 37 per
cent of the island's territory.
