[02] President Clerides - Press Conference

    by Maria Chrysanthou

Constantinople (Istanbul) Nov 19 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has said that the proximity talks, beginning in New York 3 December, differ from any previous talks because this time, apart from the three main protagonists (the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides and the UN Secretary General), other important states are engaged.

Speaking at a press conference here today, the President referred to US scenarios on Cyprus and said the US are determined to intervene in order to bridge the gap between the two sides.

[03] Cyprus - House of Commons

Nicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- The House of Commons is encouraged by the proposed resumption of Cyprus proximity talks on 3 December in New York, Labour MPs said in an early day motion submitted on 17 November to the House.

Edward O'Hara, Tom Cox and Andrew Dismore submitted the motion which states that the House shares in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, noting that "Nicosia approaches the millennium as the only city in Europe still divided".

    [04] Turkish Cypriots - Britain

Nicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- The Turkish Cypriot Democratic Association, one of the oldest organisations in the Turkish Cypriot community in Britain, has pledged its support for anybody who opposes Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the so-called elections in the occupied areas next April.

Speaking at a reception in London, Chairmam of the Association Hasan Raif said "we will spare no effort in supporting the one Turkish Cypriot who will stand against Denktash regardless of who he is and what he stands for".

    [05] Denktash - Press Conference

    by Maria Chrysanthou

Constantinople (Istanbul), Nov 19 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said he would raise all important issues at next month's proximity talks, with special emphasis on the issues of political equality and the recognition of two separate states in Cyprus.

Denktash, who leads a self-styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus, also said he would put forward his proposal for a confederation and added that if UN resolutions on Cyprus were any use, the question of Cyprus would have been solved a long time ago.
