    [01] Cyprus - World war dead

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- The 70 million people who lost their life during the two world wars will be honoured by Cyprus on Thursday, together with the rest of the countries of the Commonwealth.

    The Council of Ministers decided that a two-minute silence will be held during a gathering on November 11 in front of the Civil Servants' (PASIDY) building in Nicosia which will be addressed by political and religious dignitaries.

    [02] Cyprus - Turkish violations

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus has protested new violations of its air space by Turkish military aircraft last October, pointing out that such actions take place at a time when the international community expects a different attitude from Turkey.

    In a letter to the UN Secretary General, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the international organisation, Sotos Zakheos, says these Turkish intrusions "are in violation of international air traffic rules and at the same time, they are in contravention of the provisions of Security Council resolutions on Cyprus".

    [03] Cyprus - Israel - Egypt - Pollution exercise

    Nicosia, Nov, 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus Israel and Egypt will hold a joint marine pollution exercise in the eastern Mediterranean Sea between 8 - 11 November.

    The exercise will take place in the context of the regional plan for cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea basin in the event of a large- scale oil spills.

    [04] House President - Polish Ambassador

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Polish Ambassador Wojciech Lamentowicz said Cyprus and Poland "must coordinate action" in view of the European Union (EU) Helsinki summit.

    Speaking after a meeting with President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou he further stressed that Turkey must fulfill all the criteria, as demanded by the other countries applying for membership, for its European course to proceed.

    [05] Workshop - Modern languages - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- The main duty of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture is to upgrade the standard of education, paying particular significance to foreign languages said here Tuesday Education and Culture Minister, Ouranios Ioannides.

    The Minister was addressing a week long workshop entitled "Teaching Modern Languages to Mixed Ability Classes" organised by the ministry in collaboration with the European Centre of Modern Languages of the Council of Europe and the Council of Ministers.

    [06] President Clerides - Departure - South Africa - Constantinople

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said today a positive change in Turkey's attitude on the Cyprus problem should not be anticipated, despite the slightly different views of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Clerides further stated that only with UN sponsored negotiations and progress the Greek Cypriot side will consent in Turkey being declared a candidate for accession to the European Union (EU).

    [07] Zakheos - Enclaved - Living conditions

    Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- A letter on the unacceptable living conditions of the enclaved Greek Cypriots in the Turkish occupied areas was sent to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan by Cyprus' Permanent Representative in the UN Sotos Zakheos.

    The letter included a detailed memorandum on the violations of human rights and basic freedoms on issues concerning education, property, religion and freedom of movement against the Greek Cypriot enclaved.

    [08] Kasoulides - Brussels - Verheugen

    Paphos, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides left for Brussels today to hold his first meeting with European Union Commissioner for the Enlargement process and pre-accession strategy, Gunter Verheugen.

    Speaking before his departure, Kasoulides said they will discuss "Cyprus' accession course as well as current developments and the way the European Union (EU) will be invited to contribute in efforts for a political settlement of the Cyprus problem."

    [09] Kasoulides - Verheugen

    Brussels Nov 9 (CNA) -- European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Process including pre-accession strategy, Gunter Verheugen expressed today his satisfaction with Cyprus' accession course, after a meeting here with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

    On his part Kasoulides also expressed satisfaction with the meeting and described the stage until the EU Helsinki Summit as particularly important as efforts for a Cyprus settlement are gaining substantial momentum.
