    [01] US President - Cyprus - Greece - Turkey

Washington, Nov 9 (CNA) -- NATO allies Greece and Turkey can improve their relations if they work towards overcoming their differences, especially over Cyprus, US President Bill Clinton said in a speech Monday at Georgetown University.

The American President referred to Turkey's role in the region if it is part of Europe as a stable, democratic and secular nation and strengthens its respect for human rights, while he described the world's oldest democracy, Greece, as a model to the younger democracies of the Balkans.

[04] President Clerides - House President

Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Turkey's acceptance as a candidate for European Union membership at December's EU summit may make conditions for a settlement in Cyprus even more difficult, House President Spyros Kyprianou said today.

Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Kyprianou said the Turkish side has not shown any sign it is ready to make a move on Cyprus and he warned against the prospect of disengaging Turkey's course to Europe from progress towards a Cyprus settlement.
