    [01] Cyprus - Israel - Flights

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- Israel has apologised to Cyprus for violations of the Nicosia FIR (Flight Information Region) last week and said it would try and avoid any future incidents of this kind, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said.

    Commenting on press reports about violations of the Nicosia FIR by Israeli, US and Turkish aircraft, the spokesman said "the Israeli embassy in response to representations by the Foreign Ministry has confirmed that its planes entered the Nicosia FIR."

    [02] New Ambassador - Slovakia

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus' new Ambassador to Slovakia Nicos Makris has presented his credentials to the country's President, Rudolf Schuster, stressing that efforts will be made to expand bilateral relations.

    The Slovak President reaffirmed his country's support to a just solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed the hope that current efforts would lead to progress towards a settlement.

    [03] Cyprus - Ecevit interview

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government today called on Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit to clarify whether or not he backs UN resolutions stipulating that it is the two communities on the island that participate in negotiations for a settlement.

    Commenting on an interview Ecevit gave to the Washington Post newspaper and Newsweek magazine, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that his statements leave no room for hope towards a Cyprus settlement.

    [04] IUF - Cyprus - Conference

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- A two-day annual conference of the Trade Group Board of the Hotel, Restaurant, Catering and Tourism Sectoral Council (HRCT), affiliated to the International Union of Federations of Food, Agriculture, Hotels, Restaurants, Catering and Allied Works (IUF), began today in Nicosia.

    The conference, which is hosted by the Cyprus Hotels Employees' Federation (OEXEV) of the Cyprus Workers' Confederation (SEK), is attended by IUF leaderships and trade unionists from 18 countries, representing workers of the tourism sector from all over the world.

    [06] CoE Economic Affairs and Development Committee - Meeting

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- President of the Council of Europe (CoE) Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Economic Affairs and Development, Helle Degn, today pointed to Cyprus' strategic and economic importance "as an economic link and bridge between Europe, to which it belongs, and the Middle East, Asia and Africa".

    Degn was addressing a Committee meeting which opened in the southern coastal town of Limassol, during which Finance Minister Takis Klerides said the Cyprus Republic has a free market economy since its establishment in 1960, but noted that today it has to face the challenges of rapid technological changes and the globalisation of economies.

    [07] Labour Minister - Employment - Seminar

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- Labour and Social Insurance Minister, Andreas Moushouttas, today opened a tripartite seminar on "Employment and Free Movement of Workers Related to the European Union Accession Process", organised by the Labour Ministry and the International Labour Office.

    Addressing participants, comprising government officials and members of employers' and workers' organisations of the 11 candidate countries for accession to the European Union, Moushouttas said that the seminar "will prove instrumental in examining the issues involved" in achieving "common understanding".
