Washington, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Top US envoys for Cyprus still have a lot of
work to do to bring the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to the negotiating
table under UN auspices, Jim Folley, State Department spokesman has said.
He said meetings which Presidential Emissary Alfred Moses and Cyprus
Coordinator Thomas Weston had in Ankara, Athens and Nicosia for this
purpose were "productive and helpful".

[02] Italy - Cyprus - Resolution
Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Italian parliamentarians have called on their
government to back Cyprus' accession to the European Union, irrespective of
a solution to the island's continuing division and Turkish occupation.
Rome is also urged to support the resumption of negotiations on the
basis of UN Security Council resolution 1250 and help towards
reconciliation of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities through
bicommunal contact.

[03] Cyprus - UN - Top envoy
Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government is considering a proposal by
the UN for the appointment of Peruvian diplomat Alvaro de Soto to the
vacant post of UN Secretary-General's special representative for Cyprus,
diplomatic sources told CNA today.
"The government has been informed in the past few days of Annan's
intention and is looking into the matter," the sources said, noting that
the government of the Republic wishes to facilitate the UN chief's task in
this respect.

[04] Finance Minister - House Finance Committee
Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Prospects for the local economy in 2000 are
"encouraging" Finance Minister Takis Klerides said, noting that all the
basic macroeconomic indices present a satisfactory development and public
finance divert from the desired direction.
Addressing the House Finance Committee on next year's budget, he said
the growth rate will range around four per cent, unemployment around 3,5
per cent, and inflation will mark a marginal increase which will depend on
the adoption of a package of measures to increase public revenues.

[05] Sex education - BBC programme
Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- A series of 15-minute radio programmes on sexual
issues prepared by the BBC World Service in cooperation with the
International Parenthood Federation (IPPF) go on air on local radio station
"ANT1 FM" today at the initiative of the Cyprus Planning Association.
The Greek language version of "Sexwise", running in 11 European
countries, was produced in Cyprus and Greece this summer and will be aired
on ANT1 programme "The citizen speaks" every Friday until December 24.
