    [01] President - Military manoeuvres

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has described today's military exercise he watched as "very successful" and said it was a combination of defensive and offensive moves in which all weapons participated.

    The President and the top military brass watched part of the annual military manoeuvres the National Guard conducts in conjunction with the Greek armed forces.

    [02] Spokesman - Cyprus question

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- The government has expressed concern that the Turkish side is trying to bring the proposed Cyprus peace talks closer to the European Union summit in December, in the hope of securing candidate status for Union accession.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the government does not have any information about a change in the timetable set for talks, which according to UN resolution 1250 and the G8 summit communique is the autumn.

    [03] Maritime Cyprus - Press Conference

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Maritime Cyprus was a most successful conference, according to organisers, who said the meeting addressed many issues relating to shipping matters.

    "Cyprus has again made a positive contribution to international shipping and the massive participation in this conference also raises our expectations for a successful course of shipping here," Vassos Pyrgos, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works told the closing press conference.

    [04] House President - Syria

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Senior Syrian government officials believe that any settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem should be in line with UN resolutions and said that a Cyprus solution would have positive repercussions on the Middle East peace process and vice versa.

    The Syrian positions were outlined to House President Spyros Kyprianou at his meetings in Damascus, during a four-day official visit.

    [05] Road accident - Four foreigners dead

    Larnaca, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Four middle-aged British tourists were killed in a road accident here, when the hired car they were travelling in was involved in a head on collision with another two cars.

    No names were released by the authorities of the British Bases here, where the tragic accident occurred, but the dead persons were two couples.

    [06] Greek Defence Under Secretary - Visit

    Larnaca, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Greek Defence Under Secretary Dimitris Apostolakis arrived here today to watch part of the annual military exercise code-named "Nikiforos '99" which began on Saturday.

    He will also have meetings with the political leadership and will call on President Glafcos Clerides tomorrow morning to discuss current issues relating to Greco-Cypriot relations.
