[02] Greek Cypriot - Turkey - Court decision implementation

Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has decided to postpone the discussion and adoption of a resolution urging Turkey to comply with a judgement of the European Court of Human Rights concerning continuous violation of human rights of a Greek Cypriot.

Tuesday's outcome was taken after a British proposal to postpone the discussion on the Titina Loizidou case and the overriding decision of the current Committee chairman, Iceland's Foreign Minister, a move many considered as having bypassed the rules governing the functioning of the Committee.

[04] Political parties - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot political parties did not appear surprised over the intransigent stance held by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, on efforts for the resumption of bi-communal talks on Cyprus, during his meeting yesterday with US President Bill Clinton.

All parties agreed that if the UN Secretary General calls for talks the Greek Cypriot side should respond positively, but warned that if the Turkish side does not agree to the terms set by the UN Security Council and the Group of Eight (G8) for talks without preconditions, negotiations would fall through.

[05] US ambassador - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- The US is continuing to work for the resumption of unconditional UN-led talks between the two sides in Cyprus, aiming at a bizonal, bicommunal federation, and this is the goal of the upcoming visit of US Presidential Emissary Alfred Moses to Nicosia, Athens and Greece.

In a statement issued today on the meeting between US President Bill Clinton and Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit on Tuesday, American Ambassador in Nicosia Donald Bandler says "Cyprus made up a key part of those discussions".
