[03] UN chief - Cyprus President

New York, Sep 25 (CNA) --- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is anticipating the results of a meeting between US President Bill Clinton and Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit before announcing whether he will extend invitations to the two sides in Cyprus for unconditional talks in mid October at West Point, New York.

This is the result of today's half hour meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Annan at the UN headquarters during which views on the Cyprus question were exchanged and the two men discussed the invitation for talks.

The Greek Cypriot side has stressed that it insists on a substantial dialogue which would lead to progress for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Speaking after the meeting, the President said they "exchanged views on the Cyprus problem."

"We examined when the invitations will be extended and what they will contain," Clerides said in a brief statement.

He refrained from replying to a question whether the UN chief will send invitations for talks.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the Secretary-General "fully shares the view that on the one hand UN Security Council resolutions should be implemented and on the other a substantial dialogue should take place leading to substantial progress."

Papapetrou said the UN chief "invests a lot in the meeting President Clinton will have with Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in Washington on Tuesday."

"Immediately after this meting he will reach a final decision," he added.

Reports indicate that Annan's reply will be positive and that the he will extend invitations for talks.
