    [01] Clerides - Holbrooke - Cyprus problem

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 24 (CNA)-- US Permanent Representative at the UN, Richard Holbrooke, expressed his desire to remain actively involved in the Cyprus issue, stressing Washington's support to Cyprus' entry into the European Union.

Speaking after meeting here yesterday Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, the former US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus said he had no indications as to whether Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will be attending the Cyprus peace talks, noting it is a little early to say whether the talks will take place.

    [02] Turkish FM - Cyprus - Greco-Turkish relations

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem has appeared totally intransigent regarding the Cyprus problem in his speech before the UN General Assembly.

Referring to Cyprus, in his speech yesterday, Cem claimed a just and lasting compromise in Cyprus can only be based upon "two separate states", lifting the so-called "embargo" on the Turkish Cypriots and creating a confederation on the island, contrary to UN Security Council resolutions calling for the establishment of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

[03] Foreign Ministers - Big "5" - Cyprus by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- The Foreign Ministers of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council reiterated their call here Thursday to the UN Secretary-General to invite the leaders of the two sides in Cyprus for negotiations this fall.

Their position is contained in a statement which includes a reference to Cyprus, and was issued after their meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The Cyprus government welcomed the statement, saying it is a repetition of the position of the G8 (Group of seven most industrialised nations plus Russia).

[04] NAM Foreign Ministers - Cyprus

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- The Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement endorsed the request of the Security Council to the Secretary- General to invite the leaders of the two sides in Cyprus to comprehensive negotiations in the autumn of 1999, stressing that the lack of progress was due to Turkish intransigence.

Addressing a meeting here yesterday of his NAM counterparts, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides urged the Movement to call upon the Turkish side to abandon its unacceptable preconditions and accept the invitation of the Secretary-General and attend negotiations.
