[02] Government Spokesman - President Clerides - US Coordinator

Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides and US State Department Coordinator Thomas Weston had a substantial discussion of the Cyprus problem but the US official did not put forward any new proposals, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

He said "American determination to offer substantial support to the UN Secretary General's initiative" for a Cyprus settlement was evident during the meeting and noted the government's satisfaction with Weston's remark that both he and Clerides "expressed willingness to do what we can to move ahead on this issue".

Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) -- International Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) President, Haris Sophoclides, who lives in the UK, rejected today reports in the British press that he donated funds to the British Labour party.

The Sunday Telegraph claimed in an article published September 5th that "the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood, of which Sophoclides is President, was listed as a donor to Labour in its 1997 accounts" and that the POMAK President pledged on March 23 1999 to donate one million sterlings to the Labour party.
