CNA SC/EC/MA/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2230:CYPPRESS:08[08] Stock Exchange - Three-week break - DecisionsNicosia, Sep 3 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Stock Exchange will shut again its doors, this time for 15 working days, (three weeks) starting on September 6, to enable brokers sort through a backlog of paperwork caused by huge trading volumes. The decision was taken after a meeting between the CSE board, the Capital Purchases Committee, representatives of the island's brokers, investors, and listed companies. Announcing the decision, the Chairman of the CSE board, Dinos Papadopoulos said "this solution is painful but there was no other alternative." He expressed the hope that the new measures decided this evening, will "put the bourse onto a new foundation." The bourse will reopen on September 27 allowing sufficient time for all paperwork to be cleared. Papadopoulos said that with the reopening of the bourse, all brokerages will adopt a new way of working. Among the measures taken are that no transactions will take place without presentation of the documents of the titles, all orders must be paid before transactions take place, all orders made by telephone will be recorded to protect investors and finally all transactions will have to be sorted out by September 27, otherwise brokerages will be suspended from the CSE. Stock Brokers Association Chairman, Louis Klappas, welcomed today's developments, saying they are "heading towards the right direction." His views were echoed by the Chairman of the investors' association, Alkis Argyrides who said investors do not necessarily agree with the decision which was nonetheless taken in an effort to solve the CSE problems.
