[01] Greek Deputy FM - Arrival

Larnaca, Aug 20 (CNA) -- Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Gregoris Niotis, who arrived on the island today, has given his full backing to Cyprus' bid for European Union membership and said this has nothing to do with Turkey's European aspirations.

"As far as Greece is concerned Cyprus' accession to the European Union is a European commitment and an absolute priority, which cannot be connected to the possible prospect of Turkey's union with the EU," he said on arrival.

Niotis, here to address the opening of the world congress of overseas Cypriots tomorrow, also said that Greece "has no strategic reasons to exclude Turkey's European prospect", adding that this "cannot be linked with Cyprus' accession".

He said that Cyprus "belongs to the first wave of enlargement and we must move fast in this direction".

He said that the Congress "interests not only overseas Cypriots, but generally hellenism at large".

On Monday, Niotis will be received by President Glafcos Clerides.

    [02] US Ambassador - Arrival

Larnaca, Aug 20 (CNA) -- New US Ambassador to Cyprus, Donald Bundler, arrived in Cyprus this afternoon, reassuring that he will do everything possible to encourage a just solution to the Cyprus problem.

On his arrival at Larnaca airport, Bundler said that he is looking forward "to getting to know better the people and the rich culture of this island".

"You can be sure that I will do all in my power to encourage a just and durable solution to the Cyprus problem and to build upon the already excellent relationship between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus", he said.

Bundler also said that he intends to "approach and conduct" his mission in a "spirit of friendship".

"There is much to know from an ancient country like Cyprus", he added. Bundler, who is succeeding Kenneth Brill, said he is "fully aware of the importance of the work to be done here".
