    [02] Clerides - Hercus - Shuttle talks

Nicosia, Aug 17 (CNA) -- UN resident representative Dame Ann Hercus had her first meeting today with President Glafcos Clerides since her resignation was announced last month.

Speaking to the press after the 45-minute meeting, Dame Ann said she has commenced her shuttle talks between the two sides and reconfirmed she is resigning for "personal, family reasons".

This afternoon the UN official will meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Dame Ann commenced shuttle talks with the two sides in October last year in a bid to ease tensions on the island and pave the way for the stalled peace talks to resume.

Negotiations to settle the Cyprus problem have not been held since the summer of 1997 following preconditions set by Denktash for the recognition of the illegal regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974.

He also demands talks aimed at a "confederation of two states", a precondition rejected by the UN, the Cyprus government and all key players in the peace process as it is contrary to UN resolutions stipulating for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

On July 28 the UN announced that Dame Ann had submitted her resignation to the Secretary-General for family reasons but would remain at her post until the end of September.

She took up her post as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary- General on July 1, 1998, and was appointed Special Representative only a few weeks before her resignation.

Dame Ann told the press she will stay on at her post until September 30 and will leave the island "on or about that date".

    [03] Hercus - Resignation - Promotion

Nicosia, Aug 17 (CNA) -- UN resident representative in Cyprus Dame Ann Hercus had "asked the Secretary-General to rescind her recent promotion to Special Representative, as she was leaving Cyprus. Mr Annan had, however, declined to do so."

A UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) press release issued today says Dame Ann's proposal was made in her resignation letter to Kofi Annan.

Hercus' resignation for "family reasons" was announced by the UN on July 28, only a few weeks after she was appointed Special Representative.

She will remain at her post until September 30. Today she resumed her shuttle talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides aimed at reducing tensions and the resumption of peace negotiations.

Dame Ann had begun the shuttle talks after she took up the post here as the Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative.
