    [02] Cyprus - Prince Charles

Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Press reports alleging that Prince Charles was threatened by people off Cyprus' coast do not seem to correspond to reality.

The reports, which appeared in Britain, alleged that the heir to the British throne was threatened by the occupants of a small boat, somewhere near Cyprus and was told he would be given a lesson.

The reports also said the words uttered by the occupants of the boat referred to Cyprus' struggle against British colonial rule in the mid-1950s during which several young men were put to death.

"While Prince Charles and other members of his family were at the coast of the island of Nisiros (a small isle of the Dodecanece between Kos and Rhodes), a rubber dinghy tried to approach the coast," Andreas Pirishis, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told CNA today.

Two people, a man and a woman, were on board the dinghy which was stopped by the bodyguards of the Prince some 300 metres away, he added.

According to the bodyguards, the man declared himself a Cypriot and asked them to convey to the Prince his protests because his brother was killed by the British during the EOKA struggle.

According to people who were with the Prince at the time, he was not at all troubled by the incident nor did he pay any attention to it.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman has told CNA that "what has been reported as having been said by the occupants of the boat is pure speculation."

"No one knows what had been said, the whole picture given is quite confused. We are very relaxed about the whole thing," the spokesman added.

    [03] Stock Exchange - Index - Record-high

Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) --The Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) General Index reached an all-time high today, first day after its week-long closure.

The closure had been decided by the CSE Board to give brokers time to clear up a backlog of paperwork caused by huge volume of transactions over the last weeks.

The Index today went up by 9,25 per cent compared to the last meeting and reached 317,47, which is an all-time high.

The volume of transactions was 30,3 million Cyprus pounds (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,85 US dollars).

The CSE Board today called on both brokers and listed companies to accelerate the clearing of transactions to deal with high volumes.

Last year the average daily volume of transactions was 1,4 million Cyprus pounds while the average for July 1999 reached 20 million.
