    [01] Christofias - Health

Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) -- Secretary-General of left-wing AKEL party, Demetris Christofias, will undergo a kidney transplant on August 12, at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London.

Yesterday afternoon, his doctors carried out preliminary tests. This morning he will have blood tests and will begin tissue examinations, which will be concluded on Monday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Christofias will be admitted to St. Mary's and on Wednesday his sister, Despina Mavridou, who is the donor of the kidney, will enter the hospital.

After the transplant on August 12, Christofias will remain in hospital for eight days, and will then be treated as an outpatient. He will stay in London until September 12.

His sister will stay in hospital for six days and in London for two weeks.

An AKEL press release states that Christofias is in a good mood and is optimistic that his health ordeal will be over soon.

Christofias underwent a successful open heart operation in March.
