1600:CYPPRESS:01[01] Greenpeace - Vassiliko - Press ConferenceNicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- Greenpeace today said that the new Vassiliko power station is not necessary, claiming its creation would increase carbon dioxide emissions instead of reducing them. The Cyprus branch of the organisation today gave a press conference, during which it presented its report on the energy situation on the island, according to which "today's energy market has no direction and avoids any development towards a sustainable future". The report contains specific alternatives and urges the government to stop the construction of the power station at Vassiliko. Greenpeace Mediterranean Campaigner in Cyprus, Irene Constantinou, noted that the government has signed the Rio Treaty and has also entered the Kyoto Protocol, and added that for Cyprus to become a full member of the European Union, it should commit itself to decreasing emissions of carbon dioxide. Energy Coordinator at Greenpeace Mediterranean, Anne Pyrstojarvi, said that "Cyprus is ideal for clean technologies", adding that Cyprus is missing out on opportunities to introduce renewable forms of energy, such as wind and solar energy. She said that despite the fact that Cyprus is one of the top countries in the world in solar energy use, nothing has been done to introduce renewable energy sources and the island even subsidises the use of fossil fuel. For the past 14 years, a petroleum tax has subsidised fossil fuel electricity. Greenpeace calls on the government of Cyprus to ensure that it promises to cut carbon dioxide emissions are actually put into practice. The report says that to ensure a shift in the current energy system, an independent body needs to be formed, with the authority to enforce energy decisions in the best interest for the country, in the long-term perspective. It adds that only by halting the Vassiliko project and shifting investment to renewable energy sources, will Cyprus show it is standing by its words. Asked whether he appeared before an illegal military court, as the Turkish occupation regime had said last week, claiming Georgiou had trespassed in a military area, Russell said she had "very limited information". She said UNFICYP would in the meantime "be ensuring that everything is done to ensure his welfare", adding, however that the Peace-keeping force's role "is simply humanitarian". Georgiou was abducted by the Turkish occupation forces on July 21, when he accidentally drove into the occupied areas from Piroi village, south-east of Nicosia.
