1010:CYPPRESS:01[01] Tourism and Travel StatisticsNicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- The number of tourists visiting Cyprus during the first five months of 1999 has shown an increase compared to the same period in 1998, according to tourism and travel statistics announced by the Department of Statistics and Research.For the period January-May 1999 arrivals of tourists reached 711.670 compared to 649.786 in the corresponding period of 1998, showing an increase of 9,5 per cent. The same statistics show that arrivals of travellers for January to May 1999 increased by 7,4 per cent compared to the same period in 1998. The overwhelming majority of tourist arrivals, 80 per cent, was from European Union countries, with the United Kingdom ranking first with 50 per cent of arrivals. Statistics also show that in May 1999 the number of excursionists, cruise-ship visitors and transit at ports or airports reached 8.861, long term-immigrants 311, short-term immigrants 1.065 and same-day tourists 910.
