CNA MCH/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1645:CYPPRESS:02[02] Exhumation - First stage endsNicosia, Jul 12 (CNA) -- The first stage of the process of exhumation and identification of remains of Greek Cypriot and Greek war dead at the Military Cemetery in Lakatamia and the Cemetery of Agios Constantinos and Eleni in Nicosia has been completed. The team of experts from the international organisation Physicians of Human Rights, led by American professor William Haglund, has left the sites at the two cemeteries and is now continuing the scientific analysis and examination of remains at the Laboratory in Nicosia. Meanwhile, the DNA Identification Laboratory at the Institute of Genetics and Neurology is continuing its task to complete and set up a blood bank of genetic material from relatives of missing and war dead. At the same time, the isolation of genetic material from remains has already started with a view to establish the identity through the process of DNA. Dr Marios Kariolou, who heads a six-member team of molecular geneticists and biochemists at the Institute, said remains, believed to belong to five different individuals, are already at the Institute for examination. He said many of the remains uncovered at the two sites belong to war dead of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which resulted in the division and continuing occupation of the island's northern part. The process of exhumation started at the beginning of June by some 20 or so scientists from all over the world, whose expertise covers fields such as anthropology, pathology and archaeology. Over the past six weeks the team has unearthed remains of an unspecified as yet number of war dead, most of whom are young soldiers, which are being catalogued and examined. The decision to proceed with exhumations was taken by the government of the Republic of Cyprus in a bid to put an end to the suffering of at least some of the families of war dead and persons listed as missing since the Turkish invasion. CNA MM/MCH/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2005:CYPPRESS:03[03] Foreign workers - Ministerial commissionNicosia, Jul 12 (CNA) -- A ministerial commission has decided to suspend working permits for foreign workers, in some sectors, to be determined by the Ministry of Labour. The measure will come into effect at the end of July. "We decided to adopt a proposal by the Minister of Labour not to issue any more work permits to foreign workers in some sectors," Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou said here today after meeting with Labour and Social Insurance Minister Andreas Moushioutas and Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis. Christodoulou said the commission believes the proposal is "justified, given the unemployment problem for Cypriots in some sectors." Moushioutas explained that his proposal will not be applied in certain sectors, such as seasonal workers in agriculture.
