0915:CYPPRESS:01[01] UNFICYP - BudgetNicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) -- The UN General Assembly has approved the sum of 45, 6 million dollars for the funding of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).The funds will cover the period from 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2000. This sum is part of the 623,6 m. dollars, approved by the Assembly on 8 June for the cost of twelve UN peace-keeping operations. CNA MM/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1150:CYPPRESS:02[02] House - Canada - CyprusNicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) -- The chairwoman of the joint Canada - Cyprus parliamentary friendship committee, Karen Redman, has called for a "peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem."She said the parametres of a settlement have already been laid down by the United Nations. Speaking at the Canadian House, on the occasion marking 25 years of Turkish occupation in Cyprus' northern part, Redman acknowledged that currently there is "no political settlement in sight" of the country's division. "A peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem is necessary for the security, political, economic and social well-being of all Cypriots," she said. The UN, she said, has reaffirmed its position on the parametres for a diplomatic resolution and has called for the reduction of tensions on the island. Redman expressed satisfaction with the inclusion of the Cyprus question in the agenda of the G8 (seven most developed nations plus Russia) summit, to take place at the weekend in Cologne, Germany. The G8 foreign ministers, who met last week, recommended to their heads of state to "urge the UN Secretary-General to invite the leaders of both parties to enter into comprehensive negotiations without preconditions." They reiterated their support for a comprehensive settlement on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions. They also called on all those concerned to avoid any measures that could increase tensions on the island and complicate efforts to promote a just and lasting peace. The government of Cyprus has welcomed the G8 statement but Ankara said pressure from the G8 for talks would not help bring about a solution and reiterated its unacceptable demand for recognition of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus, described by the UN as "legally invalid." CNA MM/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1150:CYPPRESS:03[03] Rhode Island - Cyprus - ResolutionNicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) -- The Rhode Island Senate and House have approved, unanimously, a resolution calling on the US Congress to work towards a solution to the Cyprus problem. It also endorses US President Bill Clinton's commitment to undertake significant efforts in order to promote substantial progress towards a solution in 1999. The resolution, sponsored by State Senator Leonidas Raptakis, who said it was high time to "draw attention to this long-standing situation and promote the withdrawal of foreign forces from Cyprus." "The division and occupation of Cyprus has gone on for far too long and after 25 years, we need to look at a solution that will contribute to improved relations between Greece and Turkey," Raptakis said. The resolution, introduced to the Rhode Island House by Myrna George, calls for "internationally acceptable means to resolve the situation in Cyprus, including the demilitarisation of Cyprus and the establishment of a multinational force to ensure the security of both communities in Cyprus." Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
