[01] Russian ambassador - Peace agreement in Yugoslavia

Paphos, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Georgi Mouradov, has said the agreement between Yugoslavia and NATO gives hopes that the peace process will return to the UN Security Council framework.

Mouradov made the statement on the sidelines of a gathering organised by the Cyprus Research Centre (KYKEM), where he spoke on developments in the Balkans and their repercussions in the area.

The Russian Ambassador welcomed the fact that the peace force in Kosovo will include countries other than NATO members and that its mandate will be renewed by the UN Security Council.

As far as Russia's participation in the force is concerned, Mouradov said the issue was not closed yet, adding that there should be coordination between the two parties, namely NATO and Russia.

The Russian diplomat repeated his country's position that minority problems cannot be settled by the use of force and added that the countries which took part in the bombings against Yugoslavia carry a great responsibility for its reconstruction.

The only thing achieved by the bombings was catastrophe and suffering for a whole people, he said.

Mouradov remarked that what has been agreed in Kosovo is not much different of what Yugoslavia had agreed on at Rambouillet.

    [02] Cyprus - Third Euro-Mediterranean Conference

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host the third Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Industry Ministers due to take place in June 2000.

A proposal to host the meeting had been submitted by Cyprus' Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, at the second Euro- Mediterranean Conference held in Klagenfurt, Austria, in October 1998, and was approved at the European Union - Euro-Mediterranean Committee held in Brussels earlier this week.

The meeting will be attended by the 15 EU member states and 12 Mediterranean countries and will deal with the issues of economic cooperation, the internal market and the progress achieved so far.

It will also examine ways of promoting activities in the industrial sector, as far as investments in the Mediterranean are concerned, and the consequences of the internal market on countries of the region.

    [03] Popular Bank - Greece

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- The European Popular Bank (EPB) has decided to increase its share capital five-fold, from 5,5 billion Greek drachmas to 25 b.

The Bank, a subsidiary of the Cyprus Popular Bank Group, also decided to seek a listing on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE).

Both moves were announced at a press conference, here today, with a live link from Athens, by the Executive Chairman of the Popular Bank Group and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EPB, Kikis Lazarides.

"We are in contact with management at the ASE and are trying to secure the appropriate information on how to seek a listing and I believe this will be easy and quick," Lazarides said.

Asked if the listing on the ASE signals a turning point away from the Cypriot market towards Greece, Lazarides said "we are not giving up Cyprus under any circumstances."

Cyprus, he explained, "is our base and we shall continue to expand and make every possible effort to be in the forefront."

Speaking from Athens, Lazarides said that by the end of this year there will be 17 offices of the EPB operating in Greece, four more offices than in 1998.

"We hope to have between 40 and 50 offices in the next three years," he said.

He said the Group will try to achieve a strong and profitable presence in Greece, in the UK and strengthen its presence in Australia, the US and elsewhere.

"The rate of growth of the EPB in the past six years was particularly fast," he told the press.

    [05] Foreign Minister - Yugoslavia - Agreement

    by Myria Antoniadou

Shanghai, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus has welcomed the peace accord reached between NATO and Yugoslavia, describing it a "step in the right direction and towards peace."

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, speaking from Shanghai, said Cyprus welcomed the dispatch of a peace-keeping force under UN aegis and the involvement of the G8 group (seven most industrialised countries plus Russia).

In a statement to CNA, Kasoulides said "the agreement achieved should be hailed as a step in the right direction and a step towards peace."

He also welcomed the fact that the UN Security Council will issue a resolution, a move which, according to the Minister, will place the entire process under the aegis of the Council.

The Minister, who is accompanying President Glafcos Clerides on his state visit to China, said Cyprus hails the decision to "send in a peace keeping force under UN aegis and the role the G8 have played in finding a way out of the crisis."

This, he said, may signal "some positive developments for Cyprus, if the international community understands that areas of instability, such as Cyprus, must not be allowed to create problems in a region in which the whole of humanity is investing in peace and stability, be it the Balkan region or the Middle East".

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Foreign Ministers of the G8 (group of seven most industrialised countries plus Russia) have recommended that the UN calls the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to comprehensive talks without any preconditions.

The group, whose foreign ministers concluded in Cologne, Germany, their two-day meeting today, also called on all concerned to "avoid any measures that could increase tensions on the island and complicate efforts to promote a just and lasting peace."

"We recommend that the G8 summit urge the UN Secretary-General to invite the leaders of both parties to enter into comprehensive negotiations without preconditions," a joint statement said in Cologne.
