    by Myria Antoniadou

Shanghai, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides arrived here today for meetings with local leaders, to address a business forum and visit the special economic zone "Pu Dong".

This is President Clerides' last stop during his six-day state visit to China.

Later today he will meet Shanghai Mayor, Xu Kuangdi, and visit the city museum. The Mayor will host a dinner in honour of the Cypriot delegation visiting China.

Tomorrow, President Clerides will address the business forum and visit the special economic zone, established in 1992 in the framework of reforms aimed at opening up Chinese economy.

    [02] Bandler - Statement - Senate

Washington, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Donald Bandler, nominee to be US Ambassador to Cyprus, has expressed the hope that the G-8 will further the impetus to the idea for negotiations between the two sides in Cyprus this autumn.

"The only way to find a just and durable settlement of the Cyprus problem is through an intensive negotiating process," Bandler told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Nominations Hearing.

The nominee for the post of new US Ambassador to Cyprus, referred to the efforts by "some of America's most capable statesmen" on the Cyprus problem, and remarked "there is no reason to believe it is amenable now to a quick fix".

He added, however, that "this must not deter us from pressing ahead with the parties and the international community to find arrangements that will meet the needs of all Cypriot and bring about a negotiated solution to this very difficult, but not intractable problem." He pledged to "do just that" if confirmed.

Replying to questions, Bandler expressed the view that Cyprus' prospect of accession to the European Union, "does introduce a new dynamic and in that sense works against the status quo on Cyprus".

He said "there are EU members who have said privately and publicly they are uncomfortable with the notion of bringing into the EU a divided island and that should lend some motivation to a solution".

Likewise, he added, "Turkey has aspirations to get into the EU and its policies on the Cyprus issue will also affect the way the EU sees the issue of candidacy".

Asked whether the G-8 intend to launch an initiative on Cyprus, Bandler expressed the hope they "will say something positive in the days ahead, something supportive about launching an initiative ahead".

He said "the Ministers will discuss it" at the meeting they are having in Cologne next week, and expressed the hope "they will further the impetus to the idea that we should begin negotiations this fall."

The American diplomat described relations between his country and Cyprus as "excellent", adding that they have "common interests on a wide range of issues" and he pledged, if confirmed, to aim at strengthening these relations.

Meanwhile in a written statement to the Foreign Relations Committee Nominations hearing, Senator, Joseph Biden, noted that this August marks "an entire quarter-century since the Greek inhabitants of northern Cyprus were ethnically cleansed from their homes by the Turkish army."

He said "something obviously must be done to rectify this tragic situation".

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    [03] Cyprus - Representations - Pakistan

    by Myria Antoniadou

Shanghai, Jun 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government will protest to the government of Pakistan against an illegal visit of its Ambassador to Turkey to the Turkish-occupied areas of the island.

Government Spokesman, Costas Serezis, who is accompanying President Glafcos Clerides to his state visit to China, said Cyprus' Ambassador to Pakistan Loria Markides, who is based in China, has been instructed to make representations to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.

According to reports in the Turkish Cypriot press, Pakistani Ambassador, Karamutullah Khan Ghori, and his wife went to the Turkish- occupied areas last Tuesday to investigate the life of Pakistani students there.

During his stay he also met with Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash.

The occupation regime unilaterally declared "independence" in 1983. Only Turkey, whose troops have been occupying the island's northern third since 1974, recognised this secessionist act.

UN Security Council resolution 541 of 1983 branded the declaration "legally invalid" and called for its withdrawal.

At the same time, it called upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus and respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus.

UN resolutions have repeatedly called for the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops and colonist settlers from Cyprus.
