The Presidential Palace meeting was part of Hercus' shuttle talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides aimed to resume the stalled Cyprus peace process.

The UN envoy told reporters after the meeting that earlier this week she met Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

She said "the talks will be continuing" and she will meet again with the President when he returns from his official visit to China.

President Clerides leaves for a six-day official visit to the People's Republic of China tomorrow.

Negotiations for a settlement in Cyprus have not been held since the summer of 1997, due to preconditions set by Denktash for the recognition of his illegal entity in the areas occupied by Turkey since 1974, recognised only by Turkey.

The 1.200-strong UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) controls the 180-kilometre buffer zone across this east Mediterranean island.

Meanwhile in New York, the Fifth Committee of the UN has approved a draft resolution on the financing of UNFICYP with 45.6 million dollars for the period 1 July 1999 until 30 June 2000.

The UNFICYP draft resolution is expected to be approved along with those of other peacekeeping missions towards the end of June, by the UN General Assembly.

[02] President Clerides - China - State visit

In an interview with the Chinese news agency "XINHUA" ahead of his six- day state visit, the Cypriot President expressed appreciation for China's "principled and constructive position" on the Cyprus issue.

President Clerides leaves for China tomorrow, June 4, and will arrive on Sunday. The following day he will hold official talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

He will be accompanied by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Commerce, the Government Spokesman, other state officials and businesspeople.

While in Beijing, the Cypriot Ministers are scheduled to have meetings with their counterparts.

Cyprus and China established diplomatic ties in September 1971 when the People's Republic of China was admitted to the UN. In June 1997 the Foreign Ministries of the two countries signed a Protocol of Cooperation.

In his interview with "XINHUA" the Cypriot President said "we attach great importance to our relationship with China and to the further growth of ties", in view of the international status and the constructive and active role the country plays today in world affairs.

He pointed out that there is ample ground for the further development of relations, due to the longstanding friendship between the two countries, their determination to promote them further and the close identity of their positions on major international and regional issues.

The President also condemned the recent bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia and expressed his sympathy to the people of China and the families of the victims.

[04] Cyprus - Turkish Foreign Minister

Commenting on a statement by Turkish Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem, Serezis said there was no international support to the idea of a separate Turkish Cypriot state.

Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, and Ankara have repeatedly called for the recognition of the puppet regime unilaterally declared in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island and "they have repeatedly received a negative reply," Serezis noted.

The Cypriot official recalled that UN Security Council resolutions call for a solution to the Cyprus problem with a single sovereignty, a single international personality, and a single citizenship, excluding union in the whole or in part with any other country and any form of partition or secession.

He said the government decision not to deploy Russian-made S-300 anti- aircraft missiles in Cyprus and instead to deploy them on the Greek island of Crete, was not the result of the Turkish policy or threats.

"The US and the European Union had indicated that tension should be avoided, because serious initiatives for a solution to the Cyprus problem would be undertaken," Serezis said.

"It was in this context that the Cyprus government reached this decision," he said.
