    [01] Archbishop Chrysostomos - Allegations - PKK

Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- The Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, dismissed claims that the Cyprus Church offered financial assistance to the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK).

According to Turkish press reports Kurdish rebel leader, Abdullah Ocalan, told the Turkish Court, during his trial, that PKK had received funds from the Cyprus Church.

Speaking to LOGOS TV and radio station, Chrysostomos said he was "surprised to hear this report, because nothing of the kind had even happened".

The Archbishop said the Church "has always sympathised with the struggle of the Kurdish people for freedom and respect of their human rights."

At the same time, he pointed out that the people of Cyprus had also suffered the loss of their freedom and violation of their human rights as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the island's northern third.

He stressed, however, "we have never given any money for the struggle of the Kurdish people".

    [03] Lyssarides - Cologne - European Socialists

Larnaca, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Socialist EDEK leader, Vassos Lyssarides, left today for Cologne, Germany, to attend a meeting of European Socialist leaders.

Speaking on departure, at Larnaca airport, Lyssarides said the meeting will deal mainly with the elections for the European Parliament, but other issues, especially that of the situation in Kosovo will also be discussed.

Referring to the Yugoslav crisis, he expressed the hope that "wiser thoughts will prevail, the bombings will stop and a political solution will be found to this problem which."

He pointed out the this problem "could have grave consequences on Europe's common foreign and defence policy".

Replying to questions, Lyssarides agreed the role of the UN has been downgraded in the case of the Yugoslav crisis.

"When a group of countries transforms itself into international police and court, ignoring the UN, which they cite only when it suits their interests, this is obviously a downgrading of the role of the international organisation," he remarked.
