CNA EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1420:CYPPRESS:02[02] House President - Chief negotiator - Romanian SenatorsNicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Foreign Policy in the Romanian Senate, Ghiorghi Prisacaru, stressed here today their common stance on the Cyprus problem and the situation in Yugoslavia.Prisacaru along with Marcian Bleahu, member of the Committee of the Romanian Senate, are on a three-day visit here. Speaking after the meeting, Kyprianou commented on Romania's steady support to a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN Security Council resolutions and made special reference to the two countries' common goal of accession to the European Union. "We all hope Europe will not only be based on economic cooperation but on principles" as well, Kyprianou pointed out. Referring to the situation in Yugoslavia, Kyprianou said the parliaments of Cyprus and Romania hold the same views on the issue and stressed that "the problem cannot be solved by the use force" and that "a peaceful solution should be found". Speaking through an interpreter, Prisacaru expressed full agreement with Kyprianou's views, and reaffirmed his country's support for a bizonal bicommunal federation on the island. He also congratulated Cyprus for starting accession talks with the EU. Pointing to Romania's achievements during the last 10 years, Prisacaru expressed the conviction that his country would overcome certain difficulties and succeed in joining NATO and the EU. On the issue of Yugoslavia, the Romanian Senator said his country's parliament fully identifies with the stance of the Cyprus House of Representatives. He noted that a resolution had been passed by the Romanian parliament calling for an end to NATO bombings against the country and for peaceful negotiations aimed at a peaceful solution to the problem. Asked about the stance of the Romanian parliament in regards to an oil embargo imposed on Yugoslavia, Prisacaru said the Romanian government had agreed with it but it had not been discussed in parliament. "If you would like a personal view, I believe embargoes have never had any results because they do not aim at the leaders but at the people," the Romanian Senator pointed out, adding however, that "as members of the international community we should respect its rules". Prisacaru extended an invitation to Kyprianou to visit Romania. The date of the visit will be fixed soon. The Romanian Senators were also briefed today on Cyprus' accession course by Chief negotiator for Cyprus in talks for EU membership, George Vassiliou. Speaking after the meeting Vassiliou said the two Senators expressed the wish for greater cooperation between the two countries. CNA MCH/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1425:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus' chief negotiator - EU - Swedish representativeNicosia, May 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus' chief negotiator for the island's accession to the European Union (EU) George Vassiliou today met with the special representative on Cyprus of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Kai Falkman.Falkman, who is on a five-day visit to Cyprus to attend a conference on the EU, Cyprus and the Middle East, leaves the island tomorrow. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Vassiliou said they discussed Cyprus' EU accession course and expressed satisfaction with Falkman's views on the issue. Vassiliou noted they also discussed the Cyprus question, adding he stressed the intransigence of the Turkish side. This intransigence was realised by the Swedish special representative himself during his visit to the occupied areas in the northern part of the island and his meetings there, Vassiliou said. The Turkish Cypriot side insists "on a certain kind of recognition of their self-styled regime which can be done neither legally, nor politically or morally", he pointed out, adding that the Swedish envoy shares the same view. Asked about Falkman's views on the Turkish Cypriot demand for recognition, Vassiliou said the position of the international community is clear. "They cannot in any way recognise the results of the Turkish occupation", he noted. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
