[04] President Clerides - Employers - Annual Meeting

Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides assured that in implementing the European acquis communautaire the government will do its utmost to support the productive forces in their effort to deal with modern challenges.

President Clerides was addressing the annual Meeting of the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEV), Cyprus' second-largest employers union, which took place here today.

He said Cyprus' economy showed "a spectacular improvement in 1998", with the growth rate reaching 5,0 per cent according to preliminary reports, adding that its "satisfactory course is expected to continue in 1999" with a growth rate of around 4,0 per cent.

Unemployment this year will fall to 3,1 per cent compared to 3,3 per cent in 1998, while inflation in 1999 will be around 2,2 per cent which is the same as that of last year, compared to 3,6 per cent in 1997, he noted.

He pointed out that the government is looking closely at the budget deficit, which reached 5,5 per cent of GDP in 1998.

President Clerides said the deficit, together with crucial issues related to Cyprus' harmonisation process such as the liberalisation of the financial system, are being discussed in the dialogue he has started with the political parties in a bid to reach consensus.

Cyprus, along with Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic started substantive accession negotiations with the European Union (EU) in November 1998.

President Clerides said even EU officials recognise that Cyprus has made "considerable progress" regarding its harmonisation with the acquis communautaire, adding that all of the island's negotiating positions will be submitted to the European Commission before the end of the year.

"The aim of the government is to implement the acquis communautaire reasonably fast while supporting the island's productive forces in their effort to deal with modern challenges," he said.

The President said the government measures include the backing of exports, the introduction of high technology and the enrichment of the tourist product.

He stressed that in achieving those goals, Cyprus' private sector has a decisive role to play, urging all social partners to adapt their policies to the new realities resulting from the globalisation of the world economy.

OEV Chairman Andreas Pittas stressed that the budget deficit should be reduced while private businesses should be supported, particularly in sectors where prospects are encouraging.

During the meeting, President Clerides presented the 1998 OEV European Business Award to five winners.

These are the "Alfa Shoe Co. Ltd", the shirt factory "S.G.S. STYLLA BROS Ltd", "ALCO FILTERS (CYPRUS) Ltd", the car battery manufacturers "PANOS ENGLEZOS (MANUFACTURERS) Ltd" and the copper industry "HELLENIC COPPER MINES Ltd".

The selection was based on the businesses performance in dealing with Cyprus' EU course and preparing for the island's accession to the EU.
