1135:CYPPRESS:01[01] Cuban parliamentarians departNicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- A two-member Cuban parliamentary delegation leaves Cyprus Sunday after an official week-long visit to the island at the invitation of House President, Spyros Kyprianou.The delegation comprised of Chairman of the Cuba-Cyprus Friendship Group and Secretary-General of the Cuban Parliament, Ernest Suarez Mendez, and MP Leonard Martinez Lopez. During their stay here, the Cuban MPs were received by President Glafcos Clerides and met with the House President, as well as the President and members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. They also had meetings with political party leaders and representatives andother government officials. During its contacts here, the delegation affirmed Cuba's support to a possible appeal by Cyprus to the UN General Assembly. "During our stay on the island we had the chance to see the Cyprus reality and to experience first hand the difficult struggle of the people of Cyprus," Mendez has said. Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since their 1974 invasion, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal. CNA AP/GG/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1400:CYPPRESS:02[02] "Money Show" conferences to be concluded todayNicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- "Money Show-Cyprus '98", a major two-day economic and political event comprising a number of parallel conferences, will be concluded this evening in Nicosia.The political conference "The Cyprus Issue: Aspects, Stalemates and Prospects", which focused on the island's political problem, was today's core event. This conference's list of speakers included Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, chief negotiator in talks with the European Union, George Vassiliou, and party leaders. Other conferences of the day, which are mainly economic, are "Liberalisation of Cyprus' Financial System", "Cyprus as a Regional Business Centre" and "The Use of Internet in World Market". The conference "Investment Opportunities and Development Financing in Greece and the Balkans" is also scheduled for today. The conferences were co-organised by various institutions of Cyprus such as the Central Bank, employers' associations, stockbrokers, the Greek Embassy and mass media. The main conferences focused on Cyprus' political issue and EU accession course and the prospects of the island's economy. According to co-organisers' estimates, "Money Show" would have gathered more than two thousand participants, who have also the opportunity to hold personal meetings in order to exchange views and consider new business deals. Cyprus, with a per capita income of 12,8 thousand US dollars in 1997, started accession negotiations with the European Union in March. CNA GG/AP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1430:CYPPRESS:03[03] Efforts to fight Tylliria inferno continueNicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- A fire which broke out at the northwestern Tylliria area last night is still raging out of control both to the government- controlled and the Turkish-occupied areas.Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Costas Themistocleous, is personally directing operations to put out the fire, after having cancelled his departure today for the US. He would attend a special meeting on Cyprus, organised by the World Peace Centre at the University of New Hampshire. The fire broke out late Saturday night in a private forest near the village of Kato Pyrgos and due to strong winds in the area was soon spread to the occupied areas. According to an official press release, the flames have so far burned some 20 kilometres of forest land with wild vegetation and has threatened houses and other premises. A meeting was held this morning at Pyrgos chaired by Police chief Andreas Angelides, attended also by Themistocleous and Fire Service head George Karydes. It was decided to convey a message to the occupation forces proposing help in an effort to extinguish the fire in the occupied areas. According to Turkish Cypriot reports, two houses were well ablaze in the occupied village of Limnitis, while others suffered serious damages. Forests Department staff, policemen, soldiers and civilians, totalling around 400 people are helping firemen to put out the fire in the free areas. A Cyprus Police helicopter and two helicopters from the British Bases in Cyprus are also participating.
