    [01] Cordovez concludes visit

Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor for Cyprus, Diego Cordovez, is expected to leave the island this afternoon, concluding his three-day visit here.

Cordovez will this morning have a private meeting with Dame Ann Hercus, the Secretary-General's new Deputy Special Representative in Cyprus, who arrived here yesterday.

Hercus replaced Gustave Feissel who left the island on Thursday. She will give a press conference Monday morning.

Cordovez will also meet with Jean Pierre Ritter, the UN Representative in the Investigatory Committee on Missing Persons, currently in Cyprus for contacts on this humanitarian issue.

Before his departure this afternoon, Cordovez will give a bicommunal press conference at the Ledra Palace hotel, situated in the UN-controlled buffer zone, on the results of his visit.

During his three-day visit here, the top UN envoy had two meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and two with the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said yesterday the UN envoy was examining ways to resume the stalled Cyprus peace talks and stressed the government's readiness to attend the talks.

Stylianides also expressed the view that Denktash retains his intransigent positions and that he will not attend peace talks unless his illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus is recognised.

The Spokesman said Cordovez is considering returning to the island in September.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since their 1974 invasion, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
