Heaslip, 70, entered Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs in 1955 and served in London, Brussels, Ottawa, Paris and the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. From 1975 to 1980 he was the Economic Director of the Department and led the delegations which negotiated co-operation with the Soviet Union, Poland and Iran. He retired from the Irish diplomatic service after serving as Ambassador to the Netherlands and Germany. He also headed the Irish delegation to the CSCE Conference on Economic Co-operation in Europe, that took place in Bonn, 1990. Heaslip, expected to arrive from Dublin, is likely to see Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and Turkey's Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller in the coming days, CNA has learned. The Irish presidency representative has told CNA correspondent in Dublin that ''I will try to do my best'' in his capacity as Ireland's envoy for Cyprus. Meanwhile, Alternate Minister for European Affairs of France, Michel Barnier, is expected on the island tomorrow, also for talks on the Cyprus problem.
