[01] Christofi encouraged by potential of American market

New York, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Kyriacos Christofi, has stated that the American market holds ''a great potential for Cyprus'', especially in the areas of trade and tourism.

Christofi made these statements yesterday, after completing a nine-day working visit to the US and Canada.

The Cypriot Minister visited New York, Washington and Toronto where he met with officials of the US Commerce Department and other government officials, as well as key figures in the US tourism industry and private sector leaders.

He also attended events held by the Cyprus community, marking the 22nd anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus' northern third.

During his stay in the US Christofi attended a lunch with editors of travel publications and a reception with tour operators to whom he outlined steps made to attract more American tourists in this east Mediterranean island.

Christofi said he was impressed by the very friendly reception he received in the US and the positive attitude Americans appear to have towards Cyprus.
