FEB. 3, 1997 DAY

NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

SARAJEVO - The president in the Presidency of the Dayton B- H, Momcilo Krajisnik, talked in Pale with charge d'affaires of the US Embassy in Sarajevo, Michael Parmly, on economic issues in the Dayton B-H - the Central Bank, currency and external debt. After the meeting, president Krajisnik stressed that, in the margins of the meeting, harmful effects of purported interview of Radovan Karadzic, published in the Greek paper "Elephtrotipia", and which relates to the issue of Brcko, were also discussed. "That interview consists of a number of false indications of the RS stance regarding the issue of Brcko, and it represents a big trick of those forces which would like to undermine peaceful solution in the area of Brcko, and which are trying to provoke a new conflict" stated Krajisnik.

WASHINGTON - The Arbitration Commission for the Interentity Boundary Line in the Area of Brcko, has begun its work in the US Government building in Washington. Other than the Commission chair, Roberts Owen, the RS and B-H Federation members of the Commission, Vitomir Popovic and Cazim Sadikovic, respectively, have also took part in the Commission work. The procedure provides for only the narrow circle of Commission members to participate in the work, and in order to explain the RS attitudes in connection with the arbitration subject, a series of other meetings were organised.

PALE - The co-chairmen of the Council of Ministers of the Dayton B-H, Boro Bosic, talked in Pale with UN representative in RS, Geoffrey Beaumont on the previous UN activities and role in the Dayton B-H. Mr. Beaumont stressed that the UN activity in the Dayton B-H has been conducted in two ways - with the help of the special envoy in Sarajevo and the UN secretary- general Kofi Annan, through which two channels information is reaching the UN Security Council. At the meeting, which was also attended by deputy foreign minister in the Dayton B-H Council of Ministers Dragan Bozanic, activities on the further constitution of joint institutions and the adoption of new legislation for quick start programme - which are prerequisites for successful work of Donor's Conference - scheduled for the beginning of March - were also discussed.

BANJALUKA - The head of the RS Army (VRS) General Staff, general Pero Colic, and RS National Assmelby vice-president, Nikola Poplasen, talked today in Banjaluka on the combat readiness of VRS units and their material needs. The meeting was also attended by the VRS First Krajina Corps commanders, representatives in the National Assmelby, ministers of the RS Government, mayors and police chiefs of the western RS municipalities. After detailed analyses of the level of combat readiness and assessment of weaknesses which disable VRS as a guarantee of peace in this area, it has been concluded that material problems will be the main topic of the next Assembly session.

BEOGRAD - The RS minister of trade, Mladjen Cicovic, and legal advisor in the RS government, Dragan Dragic, talked in Belgrade with Serbian trade minister, Srdjan Nikolic, of unresolved status of RS property in Serbia, and also about the problems concerning the exchange of goods between these two republics.

BEOGRAD - His Holiness, Patriarch of the Serbs, Pavle, asked from Serbian people and authorities to refrain from further instigating of clashes. "Last night's events could have led to the worst, that is why I keep praying and imploring the embittered people, the young and old to refrain from further clashes, and also from those armed to be guards of peace and order, in stead of to be the power which is tragically ever more unaware of what is going on".

BEOGRAD - The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) assessed that "last night's unprovoked raid of armed police forces into the building of the Faculty of Philosophy, and their violence against peaceful students in their own building, represents unforgivable act against the Constitution and customs".

BEOGRAD - The Association of Serbian Film Artists (UFUS), asked the FEST Council "to stop with movie projections, as a sign of protest against the police oppression during the demonstrations in Belgrade". The Association wants the Council to make decision whether the FEST should continue, while "police beats people on the streets of Belgrade".
