  • [01] Working meeting of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu

    The Romanian PM has worked together with the Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes and with the minister of labor and social protection Lucian Liviu Albu and the Director of the National House for Health Protection Virgil Paunescu. They all debated the budget alteration which is scheduled for this week. Also under debate was the privatization of the Agricultural Bank, in focus having been the two offers coming from the Romanian - American Fund and the Regent Europe Fund.

    [02] IMAS opinion poll

    ANTENNA ONE TELEVISION STATION asked IMAS for an opinion poll which places Ion Iliescu first in the race for the Presidential office with 43 per cent followed by incumbent Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu with 19 per cent and Theodor Stolojan with 15 per cent. However the political personality in which those asked mostly believe is also the Prime Minister but with 16 per cent less comparing the results of the poll with those of a similar poll in July. Second comes Ion Iliescu who keeps the same record for a number of months now with 46 per cent. In as far as political parties are concerned the social democratic center with PDSR, PUR and PSDR is first with 49 per cent of the total number of opinions expressed.

    [03] The minister of industries is concerned by the Automotive Factory of the town of Craiova

    DAEWOO is being bought by FORD which first said that it would include the DAEWOO Romanian factory of the town of Craiova too but then it decided otherwise. Minister of industries Radu Berceanu said in Craiova on Saturday that it was paramountly important to keep the Craiova factory going and he could start negociations to this aim with the RENAULT company.

    [04] The Romanian government chooses DEMIRBANK as leader of consortium in issue of EUROBOND

    A statement of DEMIRBANK reads that the German Deutsche Bank, the Greek National Bank Greece and Alpha Bank as well as Demirbank issued Eurobonds worth 150 euros on the Romanian market. The statement of the Turkish bank also adds that it is for the first time that a Turkish bank issues Eurobonds.

    A delegation of the German Bundestag made up of Professor Dr. Gert Weisskirchen, member of the German Bundestag and spokesman of the SDP group and Harald Berwanger member of the same group are now in Romania for three days at the invitation of the Romanian Parliament.

    Press Conference of the United States Ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe, in connection with the new programme initiated by the Administration of the USA under the motto COMEBACK TO ROMANIA aimed at assisting young Romanians that studied in the US to return to Romania and find a suitable job.

    The Executive Central Bureau of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - meets for its weekly session today.

    Press Conferences of the following political parties: PNTCD - at 11:00 at the Romanian Parliament and UFD - Union of Right Wing Forces - at the central seat of the party at noon.

    The President of the Democratic Party, Petre Roman, makes a visit to county Ilfov near Bucharest.

    PETROM SA managerial board analyzes starting today the possibility to increase prices for gas and Diesel.

    A press conference takes places today occasioned by the arrival to Romania of a delegation of Merril Lynch; the delegation is headed by Jacov Frankel, Director General of Merril Lynch.

    SALA PALATULUI hosts the JOB FAIR starting today.

    Meeting of the World Federation of the Engineers Organizations organized by the General Association of Romanian Engineers.

    UNITER invites all those interested to attend the press conference organized for the OXFORD UNIVERSITY DRAMATIC SOCIETY that made a tour to Romania in the period 1 - 18 September.

    Supermodel Claudia Schiffer makes a visit to Romania at the invitation of L'Oreal. In the evening she is the guest of the talk show CHESTIUNEA ZILEI - ISSUE OF THE DAY - of PRO TV hosted by Florin Calinescu.

    [06] GLIMPSES OF THE PAST

    Greta Garbo was born on 18 September 1905.

    On 18 September 1911 the Romanian moving picture FATAL LOVE was launched starring Lucia Sturdza and Tony Bulandra. Director and producer: Grigore Brezeanu. It was the first Romanian moving picture.

    [07] TRANSITION

    Poet Ioan Alexandru passed on in Germany on Saturday. He will be returned home. He is one of the major poets of Romania. Ioan Alexandru was born in 1941 on 25 December in a village of Transylvania. A poet and a philosopher in quest of truth and beauty he published more than 60 volumes.

    Composer and singer Valeriu Sterian passed on in Bucharest hospital last Saturday night. Valeriu Sterian was born in September 1952. Alongside COMPANIA DE SUNET, his group, and in his studio he was one of the promoters of Romanian music of social message.
