  • [01] CALENDAR

    President Emil Constantinescu is offering a reception party in honor of the participants in the Foundation Fair and Associations of Romania, at the Cotroceni Palace later today.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has attended the Conference on democracy and local development.

    Bucharest is hosting the fourth meeting of the Top Level group of work for the institutionalized children of Romania which is chaired by the Prime Minister of Romania Mugur Isarescu and baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne, vicepresident of the Commission for Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament. Signing ceremony of the Programme of cultural collaboration between the Government of Romania and the Government of the People's Republic of China for the interval 2001 - 2004 by Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry of Romania and Ai Quingehun, deputy minister of culture of the People's Republic of China.

    At the Palace of the Romanian Parliament, in the organization of the Green Internationale the Sympozium takes place on the theme COOPERATION IN THE BLACK SEA AREA.

    The Civil Alliance - the Bucharest Branch - invites all those interested to attend and participate in the debate ROMANIA AND BULGARIA - TOGETHER OR COMPETING ONE AGAINST THE OTHER TOWARD THE EUROPEAN UNION.

    National Oil Company PETROM s.a. invites all those interested to attend the official inauguration of the new park of oil extraction which has been laid out at Cobia Schela Gaesti.

    The third edition of the Fair of the Civil Society FAR 2000 is unfolding in the open air at Piata Universitatii on the streets Edgar Quinet and Biserica Enei. All along the Fair taking place will be seminars, launching of books, concerts and shows. At the media stand of the Fair the visitors will see which is the road to information with the written press materials or the news items broadcast by radio or television stations. The ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION is represented by ROMANIA CULTURAL, ROMANIA TINERET and ANTENA BUCURESTILOR channels while the Marketing Department is present with various offers of the Publishing House CASA RADIO.

    The Noesis Cultural Society is launching at Casa Scriitorilor the first virtual book of Romania which is edited by INTERNET in MICROSOFT READER format under the title VIRTUAL ANTHOLOGY NOESIS.

    In Chicago the restaurant LITTLE BUCHAREST is hosting this year's edition of the festival TASTE OF ROMANIA, a festival which has been going on for the past ten years.

    Sydney/Australia - opening of the XXVII - th edition of the Summer Olympic Games. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI has been covering live the opening festivity and our eight reporter team keeps us connected to the most important sports events of the end of the century and millennium.

    [02] Chairman of the Romanian Senate is visiting Poland

    Mr. Mircea Ionescu Quintus is now on a visit to Warsaw, Poland for talks with officials of that country. He was received by President of the Council of Ministers Jerzy Buzek with whom he tackled the expansion of cooperation between the two countries and the more intensive cooperation of formulas of regional collaboration. The Polish Prime Minister said his country would support the efforts of integration of Romania in the NATO structures as well as in the European Union. The guest warmly thanked the hosts for the support granted by Poland with a view to Romania taking over the chairmanship of OSCE.

    [03] Romania's adherence to the European Union

    In an interview to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the chief negociator of Romania for joining the European Union, Aurel Ciobanu Dordea, said he participated in the meeting of the chief negociators of the 12 candidates. It was stressed that the acceptance of the 12 depends on the reform of the European Union and the support of public opinion in both EU members and the candidates for adherence. Stress was laid on the fact that France has both the will and the possibility to take action for concluding the process. This year a calendar will be worked out for the LUXEMBOURG GROUP while next year another one will be released for the HELSINKI GROUP in which there also is ROMANIA.

    [04] Romanian visit of the Bavarian land minister of Justice

    The Romanian minister of justice Valeriu Stoica has received at the Justice Palace here in Bucharest the minister of justice of the land of Bavaria Manfred Weiss with whom he talked about bilateral cooperation in this domain which was characterized as very good and about the increase of the number of people that participate in the exchange of experience and professional training of magistrates and other personnel of the justice ministries of the two countries. The guest said that it was not the Romanians living in Bavaria maintaining the highest crime rate but still the number is quite significant. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports that the policy of the land of Bavaria in the domain of fighting crime is transfer of the convicts from German prisons to their countries of origin as it is in the prisons of the home countries that convicts can communicate more easily with the authorities and amongst themselves.

    [05] Romania and OSCE

    Secretary of state with the Romanian Foreign Ministry Mihai Razvan Ungureanu met here in Bucharest with visiting United States Director for European Affairs of the State Department, Walter Andruszyzin, and with the US Ambassador tor OSCE David Johnson. The topics of the talks were focused in the main on the taking over by Romania of the Chairmanship of OSCE next year and the status of Romania's pledges for NATO joining. The Romanian team at the talks next year with the United States representatives is led by the personal representative of the acting Chairman, Ambassador Constantin Ene. The American side said that the actions of Romania in the interval 2000 - 2001 are what is expected by the United States from Romania in as far as NATO joining is concerned. The guests also said that now in Brussels the voice of Romania is not only heard but also believed. The United States Ambassador to OSCE added that next year Romania would be a key actor in achieving the objectives of OSCE which are the democratization of the regions where conflicts still existed, naturally, after the conflicts are extinguished.

    [06] Conclusion of the exercise NATO Cooperative Key 2000

    The Mihail Kogalniceanu air base near Constanta saw the conclusion of the multinational air exercise NATO COOPERATIVE KEY 2000. The ceremony witnessed the performances of MIG 29, MIG 21 LANCER, IAR 99 SOIM of the Romanian air force. The Co-directors of the exercise brigadier general Francisco della Vega on behalf of NATO and brigadier general Cornel Oancea representing the Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian Air Force estimated that the exercise was a success. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI recalls that participating were 600 military from the United States, France, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Turkey and units from Austria, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Macedonia, Moldova, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Romania.

    [07] International Conference for local democracy and for development as part of PHARE

    The PHARE project of the European Union organized the International Conference for local democracy and development as part of the PHARE project of the European Union. The Conference is aimed at an exchange of experience and practice for decentralization. Participating are members of the Romanian Parliament, Cabinet ministers, mayors, higher public servants, international clerks.
