  • [01] The Senate approved the motion by which the Cabinet is asked not to sign any more privatization contracts until after the general elections and the formation of the future Cabinet

    The Senate passed with 49 votes for, 21 against and 11 abstentions the motion forbidding the Cabinet of Romania to sign any more privatization contracts until after a new Cabinet is formed after general elections at the end of this month. Then the Senators voted for the bill of retrocession of nationalized dwellings, houses and blocks of flats. On behalf of the Party of Social Democracy of Romania Senator Taracila said that the mediated version of the bill which was passed by the Senate wouldl not be altered if his party, Social Democracy Party of Romania came back to power.

    [02] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu said Senate motion was a mistake

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu said that the Senate motion was a mistake as it lead to discontinuity in the economic policy of Romania. He added that the illegally privatized companies should have been the object of analyses and then measures could have been adopted in each case, where needed.

    [03] Debates of the Chamber of Deputies

    The MPies did not succeed to pass the altered version of the mediated bill on nationalized dwellings, houses and blocks of flats as the MPies of the Christian Democratic National Peasants Party declared they did not agree with three of the paragraphs upon which the Social Democracy Party of Romania MPies left the debates depriving the session of quorum. The bill of nationalized houses, dwellings and blocks of flats will have to be passed by the next legislature, after the general elections of November 26-th.

    [04] Situation of the Turkish Romanian Bank

    The situation seems to go back to normal at all branches of the Turkish Romanian bank although the announcement of the Bank reading that individuals may withdraw only 3000 USD from their deposits and that companies may take out of their deposits only salary money remains valid. The management of the Turkish Romanian bank has sent word to all deposit makers that if preassure goes down the Bank would be able to start normal work by the end of the week.

    Officials of the National Bank of Romania told media that the Turkish Romanian Bank had real chances to come back to normal given the possibilities offered but it was important for the bank to make use of those possibilities, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    However the other banks exercised caution in their relations with the TRB and the Romanian Exchange did not sell or buy any of its stock.

    [05] Daewoo Automobile Romania delivers

    Daewoo Automobile Romania has an optimum stock of parts to cover all production needs while the process of legal reorganization of DAEWOO MOTOR KOREA will in no way affect the activity of the Romanian branch, reads a communique of the DAEWOO AUTOMOBILE ROMANIA. The same document reads that the activity in Korea is aimed at a speedier taking over of DAEWOO by GENERAL MOTORS.

    [06] The European Union will not close down either of the two chapters presented by Romania

    The European Union decided not to close down any of the two chapters presented by Romania related to Telecommunications and Competition on which presented were the joint stands of the two sides. More details are asked in relation to the Chapter referring to Telecommunications while in connexion with the Chapter regarding Competition Romania did not ask for any transition period, said chief negociator of Romania with the European Union Aurel Ciobanu Dordea.

    [07] Romanian - Swedish talks

    The Swedish Foreign Minister Mrs. Anna Lindh had talks with the Romanian Foreign Minister Petre Roman on Monday which were focused on several aspects related to the taking over by Sweden of the Chairmanship of the European Union on January First 2001. The visiting foreign minister said that the expansion of the European Union was a concern of Sweden as well and that that country would examine the possibility of opening new chapters of Romania for adherence next year. Nine more chapters are envisaged to be opened next year, said Romanian Foreign Minister Petre Roman.

    [08] Launching of the project PARTNERSHIP INFOEUROPE

    The project was launched at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Romania and of the Municipality of Bucharest. The partnership is made up of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and of the Municipality of Bucharest, the National Information Institute, the Central University Library and the State Library of the city of Bucharest. The partnership which is financed by the PHARE PROGRAMME is aimed at the better dissemination of facts and figures by the above mentioned structures concerning the reality of the European Union as well as access to the markets of the Union.

    The Romanian Parliament takes a recess for the duration of the electoral campaign and the general elections at the end of the month.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu is attending the official opening of the Romanian Banking Forum, the III - rd edition, at World Trade Center, the New York Auditorium.

    Government session in Bucharest today.

    Representatives of the governments of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary which are members of CEFTA are signing in Warsaw today a common declaration asking for the enlargement of the organization.

    In Brussels today the third round of negociations takes place for the SAPARD plan for Romania with the participation of a delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of this country.

    At Sinaia, in the Prahova Valley, the International Conference takes place on the theme POLICY OF HEALTH REFORM AND PRIMARY ASSISTANCE IN ROMANIA AS WELL AS THE COUNTRIES OF EASTERN EUROPE. The conference is being organized by the Center for Policy and Services of Good Health in collaboration with the Albert Schweitzer Institute of New York City.

    The Office for the promotion of tourism of our country announces that in the interval 15 Nov.-

    15 Dec. the tourist offer of Romania is on, over the CNN, Euronews and Discovery, in the main by the playing of the videoclip LIVE THE ROMANIAN STORY, which in its turn is part of the national programme of promoting this country MILLENNIUM IN ROMANIA.

    In the studio ALFRED ALESSANDRESCU of the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, RADIO ROMANIA CULTURAL manager and staff are hosting the award ceremony for the YEARLY PRIZES of this channel of our corporation.

    Launching of the documentary film JAZZ VIA SIBIU by Mircea Kiraly on the occasion of the 30-th edition of the International Jazz Festival of Sibiu.

    Composer Henri Malineanu is buried today at the Jewish Cemetery of Bucharest on the Ion Mihalache Boulevard. He passed on on the 13-th of November, aged 80.
