  • [01] Comments linked to the resignation of the Head of the General Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian Army

    As you might know on 31 October army corps general Mircea Chelaru resigned from his position as a follow up of some statements made to the media which were incompatible with his position in the Romanian Army. In connection with the afore mentioned resignation the Stratford Independent Institute of the United States estimates that the declarations made to the media last week by army corps general Chelaru could have brought about loss of trust won by our country in front of NATO members that are following with particular interest restructuring of the Romanian army, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports. The replacement of general Chelaru seems to be a measure made in the extreme but which however demonstrates the determination of Romania to strengthen confidence of NATO member states.

    [02] Communique of the National Association of Military of Romania

    Founding members of the National Association of Military of Romania decided to re-analyze the statute of the Association, to cease association of active army officers and to postpone all activities of the Association until the setting up of the new administration of the country following the elections which will take place on 26 November. This decision was motivated by the stand taken by political personalities of Romania and personalities of the civil society that found a number of paragraphs of the association incompatible with the statute. The same personalities said that there is a negative impact of the statutes with provisions of the laws of the country and military regulations either explicitely or implicitely.

    [03] Stand of the Minister of National Defense

    Minister of National Defense Sorin Frunzaverde quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI has said that the National Association of Military of Romania is inopportune and lacks importance and nevertheless it did not need any kind of approval to be created hence the accord given by secretary of state Ioan Mircea Plingu for the association to be set up was not generated by any ill-will. The Minister of National Defense also said that his ministry was analyzing the events and contribution of the active army officers that started this association. Referring to former Head of General Chiefs of Staff, army corps general Mircea Chelaru, National Defense Minister said that all responsibility falls on the shoulders of former Minister of National Defense, Victor Babiuc.

    [04] First working session of the members of the National Security Council

    The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry hosted the first session of the members of the National Security Council on whose occasion it was established that organization is the first priority on the agenda for the following few months. The leadership of the National Security Council was elected and rallies representatives of the Foreign Ministry, of the Romanian Information Service, of the Foreign Intelligence Division, of the Military Intelligence Department and of the Romanian National Defense Ministry.

    [05] After his mandate comes to an end the President of Romania goes back teaching at the University of Bucharest

    President Emil Constantinescu who is not running for a second term told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that after his mandate comes to an end he goes back to teaching Mineralogy at the University of Bucharest on a full time basis right in the first week of the second semester of the academic year. He will again be a professor at the Chair of Geology and Geography of the Bucharest University starting the winter of 2001.

    [06] Inauguration of the " Gheorghe I. Bratianu " Oral History Center of RADIO ROMANIA

    Earlier today, Friday, 3 November, THE ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION witnessed the inauguration of the new offices of the GHEORGHE I BRATIANU Oral History Center which are situated on the 8 - th floor of the BROADCASTING BUILDING.

    It was on 23 January 1993 when the first Council of Administration approved the project of creating a center of oral history of RADIO ROMANIA. Thus as part of the Department of Science, Education and Tuition the section of Oral History was inaugurated which was a first step in achieving the present project. The present President Director - General of RADIO ROMANIA, Andrei Dimitriu, after debates of the Board of Directors and of the Council of Administration of RADIO ROMANIA issued an order on 2 June 2000 by which the section was turned into the CENTER OF ORAL HISTORY bearing the name of historian Gheorghe I. Bratianu under the coordination of the President Director - General of Radio Romania. The objective of the Center is the creation of an archive of spoken documents, recordings made with participants or witnesses of the recent history of Romania. The Oral History Center has also the task of making good use of the recordings that have a potentially historical information character and which are now in the possession of a number of people and/or institutions. Guests of honor at the inauguration were Professor Doctor Zoe Petre, Mrs. Ioana Bratianu, Academician Dinu C. Giurescu, Academician Alexandru Zub, Professor Lucian Boia, Professor Alexandru Barnea, Dean of the Faculty of History of the Bucharest University, Senator Alexandru Badea and Professor Anatol Petrenco, President of the Association of Historians of the Republic of Moldova.

    In his opening address the President Director - General of RADIO ROMANIA, Andrei Dimitriu, said among other things that the Oral History Center of THE ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION is bearing the name of the great historian Gheorghe I. Bratianu as we need in Romania to bring back to the circuit of real values the scientists that have written the real and true history of the country as well as the modest people that were not among the collaborators of the former communist regime but who have been true patriots such as Nicolae Noica. In point of fact - the President Director General of Radio Romania further said, the cassette entitled NOICA ABOUT THE GREATEST ROMANIAN POET, EMINESCU is, starting tomorrow, at the disposal of all those that want to know more and learn of the true values of the Romanian culture. The Oral History Center of the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION is led by a Scientific Council that is made up of Academicians and scientists that have always been modest but still were in the forefront of genuine science, concluded the President Director - General of RADIO ROMANIA, Mr. Andrei Dimitriu.

    [07] CALENDAR

    The President of Romania Emil Constantinescu attends the awarding of prizes at the ceremony pinpointed at the eighth NATIONAL TOP OF PRIVATE COMPANIES OF ROMANIA.

    Romania has sent a delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Rome, Italy, to the Ministerial Conference of the European Council on the anniversary of 50 years since the tabling and passing of the Convention regarding Human Rights.

    Round table on the theme EUROPEAN IDENTITY OF SECURITY AND DEFENSE organized by the Institute for Political Studies and Studies of Military Defense and History.

    THE ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION INVITES all those interested to attend the inauguration of the new offices of the ORAL HISTORY CENTER of RADIO ROMANIA. Among the historians invited to attend there are Mrs. Ioana Bratianu ( as the oral history has been given the name of the celebrated historian Gheorghe I. Bratianu who among others wrote in French in the 30- ies the well known LE PEOPLE ROUMAIN, UN MIRACLE DE L'HISTOIRE ) Academician Dinu C. Giurescu, University Professor Zoe Petre, Professor Doctor Anatol Petrencu of the University of Chisinau. The Oral History Center of RADIO ROMANIA was set up almost eight years ago and it is one of the achievements of the national public radio station of this country since we have become the public radio network of our country.

    RADIO ROMANIA starts today electoral programmes for the thirteen political parties and electoral alliances that run in the elections to take place on 26 November.

    It is 77 years today since the birth of Historian Dan Berindei, Chairman of the Section of Historical Sciences and Archeology of the Academy of Romania.
