  • [01] Opinion poll conducted by the Bureau of Social Research

    The Bureau of Social Research conducted an opinion poll for the interval 12 - 20 September. According to the poll which was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI leading in the race for the presidential office is PDSR president Ion Iliescu with 35 per cent. He is followed by the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, with 20 per cent, then the leader of the Greater Romania Party Corneliu Vadim Tudor with 12.3 per cent, the National Liberal Party candidate Theodor Stolojan with 12.1 per cent, the candidate of the Democratic Party, Petre Roman, with 9.3 per cent, the candidate of the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania, Gyorgy Frunda, 6 per cent as well as the candidate of the Alliance for Romania Party, Teodor Melescanu with 6 per cent too.

    In as far as the elections for the Parliament of Romania are concerned, the opinion poll reads as follows: PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - 38.2 per cent, CDR 2000 - Romanian Democratic Alliance 2000 - 14.5, Democratic Party - 12.1 per cent, National Liberal Party - 9.8 per cent. The rest of the parliamentary political parties are rated as having less.

    [02] President Emil Constantinescu congratulated over the phone the candidate of the Serbian opposition for having won the presidential elections of that country

    President Emil Constantinescu had a phone talk with Vojislav Kostunica whom he congratulated for the victory obtained in the presidential elections of that country. The President of Romania also had phone talks with the presidents of Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Hungary whom he urged to adopt a joint position of hailing the winning of presidential elections by the democratic forces of Yugoslavia.

    [03] The Minister of Justice Valeriu Stoica came back home after a visit to Germany

    The first vicepresident of the National Liberal Party, Valeriu Stoica, came back home after a visit to Germany during which he had talks with the German liberals who, among other things, told him that they supported Romania's joining NATO and the European Union and showed interest for Romanian citizens benefitting of visa free access to West European countries.

    President Emil Constantinescu is attending the signing of the accord of granting a residence to the Regional Center for the Initiative of Cooperation in South Eastern Europe here in Romania. The above mentioned center is meant to combat transfrontier criminality.

    Round table devoted to 50 years since the adoption of the convention on human rights, an event included in the Programme regarding the Activity of Development and Strengthening of Democratic Stability of the European Council for Europe. The round table takes place at the Palace of the Romanian parliament.

    Romania's Adrian Severin is chairing the session of the enlarged Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE. Adrian Severin is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu analyzes and then decides on the requests of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance regarding the replacement of Virgil Paunescu from the office of president of the National Health House.

    In the presence of the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, and of the President of the Romanian Olympic Committee, Ion Tiriac, the President of the Employees Union of the Jewellers of Romania, Karl Heinz, awards Andreea Raducan a solid gold medal, equal in weight to the Olympic Gold Medal. May we remind you that Andreea Raducan is Olympic champion with the team of Romania and then absolute champion. She was stripped of the gold medal as the doctor of the team of Romania had given her two tablets of Nurophen against incipient cold so she tested positive; despite the appeal made, the Olympic Committee decided that she was not worth the title of absolute Olympic Champion. The title thus went to the second placed, Romania's Simona Amanar. In point of fact all the first three places went to Romania.

    The visit to Romania continues of the Finnish minister of defense Jan-Erik Enestain at the invitation of the Romanian minister of national defense Sorin Frunzaverde.

    At the residence of the Ministry of Justie a demonstration takes place of the way the ELECTRONIC ARCHIVES WORK, a project which was worked out with the support of the World Bank. Attending the ceremony are also the Romanian minister of Justice, Valeriu Stoica and Andrew Vorkink, director for Central and Southern Europe of the World Bank.

    The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation announces the debut of the concert autumn and winter season 2000 - 2001. The first concert is part of the programme of the European Broadcasting Union and will be directly broadcast by satellite; participating are the National Radio Orchestra and the Radio Choir.

    DAY OF THE PRESS as part of the first edition of the TRUCKSHOW AND ACCESSORIES which is a manifestation specialized in commercial vehicles and auto parts at the ROMAERO Baneasa exhibition of Bucharest.

    Jose Carreras arrives in Bucharest today. He will give a concert in Bucharest with a Spanish conductor and with the GEORGE ENESCU National Orchestra.
