  • [01] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu met with the participants in the yearly international seminar THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE - RADIO MEANS OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION

At Palace Victoria the Prime Minister met with participants in this international seminar now at its ninth edition representing 25 radio stations all over the world broadcasting in the Romanian language. The Prime Minister told the radio station managers, editors and programme makers that he appreciated very much the work of the radio programme makers outside the frontiers of Romania as their programmes in Romanian for the listeners in this country was a very important means of communication for the development of relations with the Romanians living outside the frontiers of their home country and it was the most successful means of linking Romanians in Romania to those that live outside the borders of this country. At the meeting with the Prime Minister also participating was the President Director General of the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.

The Prime Minister of Romania also told the guests received last evening that if he won the presidential elections this fall his main objective would be to consistently apply the policy of integrating this country into the European Union and of trimming and streamlining legislation. Mr. Isarescu also said that if he became President of Romania he would avoid any new fracture in the economic and social life of the country and he would promote foreign policy. The Prime Minister also said he actually did not announce officially his candidacy for the office of President.

In as far as alliances to be made this matter is for the interval after the presidential elections.

[02] Assessments of the IMF delegation to Romania referring to the Romanian economy will continue

The IMF delegation appreciated that economic increase is favorable and so are the increase of exports, foreign balance, monetary, curency and fiscal policies when compared to the preceeding visit and assessment. The Romanian side also informed the IMF delegation of the subjective reasons that led to the increase of inflation, namely the revenue policy during the first six months of the year as well as the objective reasons such as the evolution and involution of the European currency, the euro, the international price of oil, the extended drought that all have led to the reaching of a ceiling much higher than that previously envisaged. The objective reasons are taken into consideration by the International Monetary Fund delegation that also noticed that the forthcoming elections did not influence the performances of the Romanian economy.

[03] PETROM increases price of crude

ROMANIAN PETROLEUM -PETROM - announced a 13 per cent increase of the price of crude delivered to refineries of Romania but will not increase price of gas. However all the private gas stations owners and distributors announced that gas price increases are operated starting next week. The reason given by ROMPETROL for not increasing price of gas at its own stations is that price of crude oil worldwide is going down.

[04] Press conference of the Home Minister of Romania

Constantin Dudu Ionescu had a press conference during which he said that trade union leader Virgil Sahleanu was murdered by hired assassins for money reasons and he excluded any political reason behind the crime. Virgil Sahleanu was a trade union leader at the TEPRO Iasi company which had been purchased by investors of the Czech Republic.

It seems that one of the security companies of the area offered its services of protection to the company for a very high six figure sum of money, an action which was opposed by the trade union leader, as in that way the company was spending too much and the salaries of the employees could have been affected, given also the rather serious economic situation of the company - say verious media sources. It was then that the security private group hired two assassins, one of them recently out of jail, to score accounts with the trade union leader, who was knifed to death a few mornings ago, on the steps of the block of flats in which he lived together with his family. He was 54. The assassins were cought and are now in the custody of the police that for the time being gives precious few details - say the same media sources.

Back to the press conference of the home minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu, we may add that he said the Romanian Police would follows all tracks to eliminate any suspicion leading to the assumption that it might have been a political assassination. Mr. Ionescu concluded with the information according to which he would present the Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country a draft for an emergency ordinance to be issued by the Cabinet of Romania with a view to regulate the activity of the private protection and security groups and companies.
